The Giants doled out $2.1 million to sign the 17 year old Villalona out of the Dominican Republic in 2006. Villalona spent his first year in the minors at full season Augusta where he hit .263 with 17 HR and 64 RBI. This young slugger has power potential that rates off of the charts. His strapping frame still has a lot of room for strength development, which gives many observers the feeling that Angel should develop into a 40 HR per season player. Angel is surprisingly agile for his size and his soft hands and good footwork play well at 1B.
Villalona is said to have a solid work ethic which will come in handy in addressing his weaknesses. He is as raw as he is talented and his plate discipline is a major risk factor. Last season Villalona walked 18 times while striking out 118 times in 123 games. His BB/K ratio will need to drastically improve as Villalona faces more advanced pitching. Additionally, as Villalona beefs up, his speed and athleticism will decrease, though as a slugging 1B, this should not affect his future projection as a prime time power threat. Look for Angel to advance to High-A San Jose this season with a promotion being highly unlikely. The Giants would be best served to take their time refining this gem.
