Arencibia is another fast track Blue Jays slugger who had an immensely successful '08 campaign with a .298 27 HR 105 RBI line that included 36 doubles between High-A Dunedin and AA New Hampshire. Arencibia is a powerfully built, aggressive hitter who has big time home run power to all fields. He is also a very good defender with a strong arm and solid mobility behind the dish. The big caveat in Arencibia's game is his lack of discipline at the plate. J.P. had a terrible 15 BB/101 K ratio that needs to improve in order for him to enjoy success against MLB pitching. Arencibia had a nice season in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .277 with 4 HR and 22 RBI, but his 5 BB/22 K's indicates that he still needs more polish in working counts.
2009 Projection: How 2009 Spring training goes should dictate much about where J.P. will begin his '09 season. Going back to AA New Hampshire seems to be the most appropriate place to begin, though the Jays could start him at AAA Syracuse. Either way, Arencibia's road to the major leagues will be a short one as he is one of the elite young catching prospects in all of baseball. With only Robinzon Diaz and Curtis Thigpen ahead of him on the prospect chart, it is reasonable to expect Arencibia to get a look by the Jays by September. Keep close watch on his BB/K ratio, as that is the biggest question mark in his game. If all goes well, his 2007 Bowman Sterling and 2008 Bowman Chrome autographs should receive more market attention.
