Tommy Hanson – Atlanta Braves RHP

H/W:  6-6  210 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  8/28/86

You'd be hard pressed to find many pitchers that had a better season than Tommy Hanson.  Over two levels, Hanson was dominant combining to go 11-5 with a 2.41 ERA and 163 K's in 138 IP.  This included a 14 strikeout no-hitter against AA Birmingham on June 25th.  Hanson added a couple ticks to his fastball which now sits at 92-94 MPH with good movement.  His curveball and slider are also already MLB plus pitches and his changeup shows quite a bit of promise too.  Additionally, Hanson has proven to be a gritty competitor with good poise on the mound.  It is hard to nit-pick Hanson's stellar season, though his ground out to fly out ratio of 0.71 could hurt him in hitter-friendly ballparks.  As he continues to develop his changeup, this number should improve.  Hanson's dominance has continued to the Arizona Fall League where he has allowed just one run and six hits in 18.2 innings with 30 K's.

2009 Projection: Hanson's stock has risen considerably and he has drawn heavy interest from the San Diego Padres as a centerpiece to the potential Jake Peavy trade.  If Hanson is traded, his chances of earning an opening day rotation spot increases significantly.  If not, Hanson will likely start at AAA Gwinnett until an injury or demotion clears room for his debut.  Hanson is one of baseball's brightest young pitching prospects and his MLB debut will happen at some point in '09.
