H/W: 5-11 190 lb. B/T: L/L DOB: 12/12/86
The Cincinnati Reds may have struck gold by selecting this former Northwestern Wildcat in the 22nd round of the '08 draft. Coming off of an intensely disappointing collegiate season that saw him bat just .227, Wiley tore apart the pitching of the Pioneer League hitting .327 with 5 HR 37 RBI 17 doubles and 29 runs scored in just 39 games. Wiley is an exceptional athlete with enough footspeed to be an above average CF and a threat to steal double digit bases every year. His left handed swing drives the ball well to the gaps with occasional fence clearing power. His 24 walks in 139 AB shows that he has the capability to work deep into counts, but the rub on Wiley is his disturbingly high strikeout totals. This was a main factor in his struggles at Northwestern (he struck out 51 times in 46 games) and, despite his early success, he punched out 49 times in 39 games with Billings.
2009 Projection: Wiley will move to full season Low-A Dayton to try and build upon his promising short season numbers. The K rate is the big thing to watch in Wiley. He doesn't walk enough nor possess enough power to make his high strikeout rates acceptable. He has shown in previous collegiate seasons a much better grasp of the strike zone, which offers promise that he can do the same with the Reds organization. There is some level of promise with this young outfielder and, in time, he could become widely regarded as a late round steal and potential starting MLB outfielder.

Chris Valaika – Cincinnati Reds SS/2B
Posted on 28 January 2009
H/W: 6-1 180 lb. B/T: R/R DOB: 8/14/85
The former 2006 3rd round draft pick had another fine season at High-A Sarasota and AA Chattanooga hitting .317 with 18 HR 81 RBI and 78 runs scored en route to being named the organization's minor league player of the year. Valaika has a very fine bat that produces good gap power to all fields that should translate into 15-20 HR per season at the MLB level. He has a good game plan at the plate and has shown a high competency for getting on base, however, he doesn't walk as much as the organization would like (35 BB/102 K's in '08). Defensively, Valaika is an intelligent player, but his subpar range and average arm profiles better at 2B than SS. With Brandon Phillips currently manning the helm at the 4-hole for the next three seasons, it will be imperative for Valaika to be able to be at least an adaquate fielding SS. If not, he may find himself stuck in the AAAA turnstiles or with another club.
2009 Projection: There isn't a lot of stiff competition for the SS job in Cincinnati as current starter Alex Gonzalez missed all of the '08 season and backups Jeff Keppinger and Paul Janish are not nearly as offensively gifted as Valaika. Regardless, Chris will almost assuredly begin the '09 season at AAA Louisville before earning a call up at some point in the season. Valaika is not a high-upside player, but his good bat and decent power could provide an immediate boost to the Reds' offense once he is called up. A solid debut with the big club could sweeten the market for some of his first year cards.

Neftali Soto – Cincinnati Reds 3B
Posted on 22 January 2009
H/W: 6-2 180 lb. B/T: R/R DOB: 2/28/89
The young Puerto Rican 3B had a stellar season splitting time between short season Low-A Billings and Low-A Dayton. Utilizing his precise hand-eye coordination and his sweet swing, Soto blasted pitching at both levels to the tune of a .340 BA with 11 HR 47 RBI and 25 doubles in just 67 games. He has good power now, but is projected to turn many of those doubles into HR's as he builds more strength. Last season, Soto demonstrated an advanced ability to make contact, striking out just 46 times, but he does need to continue to work on drawing more walks if he wants to sustain his success against advanced pitchers. Defensively, he profiles to be an average 3B though his glove and arm strength are questionable and may force him to move to a corner OF position.
2009 Projection: His success at the two levels last season ensures that he will likely begin the '09 season at High-A Sarasota as their starting 3B. It will be interesting to see how his power develops this season. Many young hitters that hit a high number of doubles early in their careers build enough strength to turn them to HR's as they mature. Soto has the ability to be a 30+ HR hitter at the major league level though it will likely be as an OF rather than a 3B.

Devin Mesoraco – Cincinnati Reds C
Posted on 31 December 2008
H/W: 6-1 200 lb. B/T: R/R DOB: 6/19/88
The young Cincinnati Reds backstop handled his first full season of professional ball very well by hitting .261 with 9 HR and 42 RBI at Low-A Dayton. At just 20 years old, Mesoraco is the complete package of hitting ability, defensive skills, athleticism and make up. His strong righthanded swing provides easy pull power right now and promises to drive the ball with more authority to the opposite field as he matures. He has a good feel for the strike zone and, unlike many young hitters, Devin does not strike out very much. Perhaps even more exciting, is his defensive approach behind the plate. His athletic quickness allows for him to be quite mobile and adept at blocking balls in the dirt. His arm is strong and accurate and he is not afraid to use it to nab unwary baserunners. Officials within the Reds organization rave about Mesoraco's intangibles as his leadership skills, work ethic, and competitive drive are said to be off the charts. Despite all of the positives, Mesoraco still needs to develop better discipline at the plate in working more counts and drawing walks. He has a tendency to swing at pitches in pitcher's counts which detracts from his ability to compile quality at bats. Devin also needs to hit ball on the outer part of the plate with more authority to the other field. He becomes pull happy at times leading to many ground ball outs. Given his desire to improve and his physical tools, this shouldn't be a long term problem or concern.
2009 Projection: Mesoraco played well enough to earn a promotion to High-A Sarasota for the '09 season. Watch to see how his power comes along as Devin has displayed decent power production for someone his age but his other extra base hits are pretty low, which indicates that he is not effectively using the whole field. If the doubles increase along with the HR's, Mesoraco becomes a much more dangerous hitter. The Reds traded for Ramon Hernandez in the off season who should serve as a solid stop gap as their top catching prospect develops. When he does, he should be a mainstay for several years to come.

Yonder Alonso – Cincinnati Reds 1B
Posted on 19 December 2008
H/W: 6-2 215 lb. B/T: L/R DOB: 4/8/87
The Cuban-born University of Miami first baseman had a monster season in 2008 hitting .370 with 24 HR 70 RBI and 80 runs scored. Given that he didn't sign until the deadline, Yonder did not accrue many minor league AB's, but his stint in the pitcher-friendly Hawaiian Winter League rendered positive results, as he hit .304 with 4 HR 21 RBI and a 20 BB/23 K ratio in 29 games. Alonso has above average power that should translate to 25-30 HR per season in Cincinnati. He hits the ball to all fields and is very effective at working counts and drawing walks. Alonso has a thick barrel-chested build that he worked hard to tighten up before his final season with Miami. Defensively, Alonso is limited to 1B and his array of skills at that position are average at best. Though he has very good power to centerfield and leftfield, Alonso needs to continue to pull balls on the inner half of the plate instead of using an inside-out swing to spray them the other way. Once he does, his power numbers should increase significantly.
2009 Projection: Yonder's offensive polish and ticking MLB contract ensures that the Reds will promote him aggressively through their system. Expect Alonso to start at High-A Sarasota with a promotion to AA Carolina at some point in the season. The Reds are pretty set with Joey Votto at 1B, but given Alonso's offensive potential and limited defensive abilities, the Reds may decide to shift Votto to LF in the future.

Juan Francisco – Cincinnati Reds 3B
Posted on 09 December 2008
H/W: 6-2 180 lb. B/T: L/R DOB: 6/24/87
Francisco continued to demonstrate his considerable power potential by hitting .277 with 23 HR 92 RBI and 34 doubles at HIgh-A Sarasota. Long arms and strong core strength enable Francisco to launch balls with the same torque and fervency as fellow young Reds power hitters Jay Bruce and Joey Votto. In addition to his lively bat, Francisco profiles to be an above average fielding 3B with good reactions and a cannon for an arm. Juan has continued to demonstrate his eye-popping offensive potential in the Dominican Winter League where he hit .341 with 8 HR 25 RBI and 28 runs scored in just 32 games. The biggest glaring weakness in his game continues to be his abysmal plate discipline as he walked just 16 times versus 123 K's last season. Additionally, some scouts fear that his thick frame will gain too much bulk at the expense of his speed and athleticism.
2009 Projection: AA should prove to be quite the test for Juan Francisco, and should give the Reds a better glance of who will be their future 3B. It is critical that Francisco improves his plate discipline against more advance pitching or else he could be stalled in his progression. If he can, he has the potential to be an above average to All-Star caliber 3B in the mold of Adrian Beltre.

Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds SS/3B
Posted on 02 December 2008
H/W: 6-3 215 lb. B/T: R/R DOB: 2/12/86
Frazier enjoyed another successful season splitting time between Low-A Dayton and High-A Billings. Todd combined to hit .291 with 19 HR 74 RBI 12 SB and 87 runs scored. Frazier has an athletic and powerful frame that should easily translate to 20-25 HR power at the major league level. Frazier is a tireless worker who strives to conquer any challenges presented to him. Defensively, Frazier is likely too big to play SS and the organization's log jam at 3B has prompted the Reds to give him time at 1B and OF in addition to SS and 3B. Frazier needs to continue to progress in his approach at the plate as he can be strike out prone. The Reds have worked with him to quiet his hands and simplify his swing.
2009 Projection: Frazier played well in the Hawaiian Winter League and looks fully ready to have a big season at AA Carolina. The Reds have several good 3B in their system (Juan Francisco, Neftali Soto), but Frazier is at the top of the organization's depth chart. Watch to see where he gets a majority of his playing time and also pay attention to his BB/K ratio. If he is able to make improvements in this area, his batting average should be able to hover around .300. Given his power potential, Frazier's 2007 autographed cards could be hot buys this spring.

H/W: 6-4 200 lb. B/T: R/R DOB: 10/4/84
In 2008 Stubbs took some strides in putting his critics to rest. Stubbs began slowly at High A Sarasota where he hit .261 with 5 HR 38 RBI and 27 SB in 86 games. Stubbs then was promoted to AA Chattanooga and AAA Louisville where he combined to hit .305 with 2 HR 19 RBI and 6 SB in 45 games. Stubbs still strikes out too much (123 times in 131 games) given his low power numbers, but his walk rate remains strong boosting his OBP to .371 this season. Defensively, he has the skills to be a Read the full story

Alexis Oliveras – Cincinnati Reds OF
Posted on 14 November 2008
H/W: 6-0 180 lb. B/T: L/R DOB: 3/29/89
Oliveras was a 9th round selection in the 2007 draft out of Puerto Rico's baseball acadamy. The Reds are excited about his bat though it is early to tell just what it will produce at higher levels. From initial scouting, Oliveras has a line drive producing left-handed swing that could projectibly produce 15-20 HR power as he matures. Oliveras has average speed and profiles as a solid defensive LF. The Reds will likely take their time with Alexis, as his plate discipline and power are currently very raw and will take a long time to develop. Though he is projectible, he is far from a sure fire top prospect. Keep an discerning eye on his development.
2009 Projection: Oliveras will likely begin the '09 season at extended spring training with a short season stint at Billings likely. The plate discipline has to develop in order for Oliveras to progress. This season should give a better view of just what to expect out of him in the future.
