James Simmons – Oakland A’s RHP

H/W:  6-4  220 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  9/29/86

The former 2007 1st rounder had a solid season at AA Midland going 9-6 with a 3.51 ERA and 120 K's in 136 IP.  The biggest asset in James Simmons' skill set is his impeccable command.  Simmons surrendered just 32 bases on balls last season and allowed just 37 walks in 270 IP during his career at UC Riverside.  James' best pitch is his low 90's fastball, which he locates well in all quadrants of the strike zone.  He also has a slider, curve and change that are less effective offerings.  Simmons tends to pitch to contact quite often and doesn't have dominant enough stuff to put away hitters at times.  AA hitters batted .282 against Simmons last year and he induced a less than desirable GO/FO ratio of 0.92.  The Athletics are keeping him as a starter right now, but his lack of a breaking pitch and ability to add velocity as a reliever may eventually shift him to the bullpen.

2009 Projection: Simmons is slated to pitch at AAA Sacramento this year with a possibility of earning some MLB innings at some point later in the summer.  The A's are flush with better arms in their system (Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, Vin Mazzaro, Michel Inoa, Gio Gonzalez) than Simmons', yet he could wriggle his way into the back end of the rotation as soon as next season.  The PCL is a difficult place for pitchers, especially flyball pitchers. Watch to see if James can employ better movement on his offspeed pitches and induce more ground ball outs.   If he can, he should be able to progress as a starter, and if he doesn't he may find himself eventually relegated to the role of middle reliever.

Eric Campbell – Atlanta Braves 3B

H/W:  6-0  195 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  8/6/85

This former 2004 2nd round pick emerged over the second half of the season at High-A Myrtle Beach batting .255 with 19 HR 67 RBI and 56 runs scored in 88 games.  Campbell is a compact, power packed hitter who has a fluid but compact right handed swing that could generate 20-25 HR per season at the major league level.  He makes contact with just about everything that he hits, lowering his K rates and he made strides in improving his walk totals (50 BB/57 K).  Defensively, Campbell is an agile, sure handed fielder with a strong arm built for the hot corner.   The big problem...and it is a big one, is a continued track record of insubordination that has led to a couple of substantial team-induced suspensions over the past two seasons.  Campbell has been described as someone who marches to the beat of his own drum, defying requests by the Braves organization to adhere to a specific rehab program following his shoulder injury in '07.  It has also been well documented that Campbell's effort is often inconsistent.  At times, he plays with a great deal of energy and grit, while other times he appears lackadasical and unfocused.  This has manifested itself in his plate discipline as well.  He makes good contact with pitches in the zone, but often gets himself out trying to pull pitches out of the strike zone.

2009 Projection: Campbell has all of the physical talent to be a perennial all-star talent.  However, his intangible skills severely inhibit his abililty to be a productive major league player.  Will he get things straightened out?  That is the million dollar question and one that will loom large in 2009.  Expect him to begin the season at AA Mississippi where his strike zone judgement will be put to the test.  His offensive potential is so tantalizingly potent that it is hard to ignore him as a viable prospect, but his myriad of character-compromising indiscretions make him a difficult guy to put much stock in.  If he does get it figured out and decides to tow the company line, Campbell can rise up prospect charts once again, but the opportunities are decreasing for Eric and the patience of the Braves is wearing thin.

Elvis Andrus – Texas Rangers SS

H/W:  6-0  185 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  8/26/86

The young Venezuelan's skills took a significant leap forward last season at AA Frisco where he batted .295 with 4 HR 65 RBI 54 SB and 82 runs scored.  Andrus is an elite SS prospect with a line drive bat and speed that could net him 40-50 SB per season at the major league level.  He has not developed much XBH pop yet, but he is projected to become a 10-15 HR hitter as he matures.  His plate discipline continues to be an area that needs work.  Last season Andrus earned a 38 BB/91 K ratio which, while not agredious, is still a bit lopsided for a top of the order hitter.  Defensively, he is a dynamic player with excellent range, a cannon arm, and a penchant for making dazzling plays.  Conversely, Andrus committed 32 errors last season with many of them being on more routine plays. Those within the Rangers' organization rave about his intangibles.  He is a dilligent worker who is driven to excel and his makeup is uncanny for someone of his age.  He strives to be a leader on the field and in the clubhouse in the mold of his favorite player, Derek Jeter.  The Rangers can only hope that their young shortstop can follow the same career path.

2009 Projection: The Rangers made big news when they informed All-Star and Gold Glove SS Michael Young that he would be moving to 3B to make room for Andrus at the start of the '09 season.  This bold maneuver speaks volumes of the favor that Elvis has curried within the organization in a short amount of time.  While his future is bright, don't be surprised to see Andrus struggle out ot the gate.  He is just 20 years old, has not had an AB above AA and still has some raw spots in both his offensive and defensive game.

Mark Melancon – New York Yankees RHP

H/W:  6-3  215 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  3/28/85

Tabbed by many as the Yankees' closer of the future, the former Arizona Wildcat did his part to confirm that honored distinction by breezing through three separate minor league stops from High-A Tampa to AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre.  Melancon went 8-1 with a 2.27 ERA and 22 BB/89 K in 95 IP.  His fastball sits at 92-95 MPH and his hammer-like curveball is quite effective at inducing groundball outs (1.54/FO in '08).  Melancon has an intensely competitive demeanor on the mound which goes a long way towards intimidating hitters.  He is a hard worker on and off the field and has all of the intangibles to be a highly successful closer.  Team officials have been concerned about Melancon's strenuous delivery and continue to tinker with it to take some of the effort and stress out of it in order to diminish his risk of injuries in the future.  Mariano Rivera is on the finishing rounds of his legendary career and Melancon is the top candidate to fill a very big pair of shoes.

2009 Projection: While Melancon seems to be ready for a definitive role in the Yankees' bullpen, it is more likely that he will be back at AAA to await his opportunity.  The Yankees seem to be well stocked with good power arms in their bullpen, but a solid spring turned in by Melancon should open some eyes for opportunities later in the season.  His predecessor, Super Mariano, shows no signs of slowing down and the Yankees have him under contract through the 2010 season.  That should give Melancon plenty of time to nestle into a regular relief role with New York, increasing his odds of being the closer for the Bronx Bombers in 2011.

Freddy Sandoval – L.A. Angels 1B/3B

H/W:  6-1  200 lb.     B/T:  S/R     DOB:  8/16/82

The understated Angels infielder continued to put up excellent numbers at AAA Salt Lake City, hitting .335 with 15 HR 88 RBI 45 doubles and 92 runs scored.  Sandoval has a line drive bat that produces gap power and high rates of contact.  He has decent speed, but ran a lot less last season than in years past.  Defensively, Sandoval is quite versatile spending time at 1B, 2B, 3B and even the OF last season.  He is sure handed and plays with a great deal of intelligence.  He is not flashy, but he can adequately fill a variety of roles.  The rub on Sandoval is his age, at 26 years old, he is rapidly losing status as a prospect and needs to step into an MLB role sometime soon.

2009 Projection: Spring training will be a critical time for Sandoval to wriggle his way onto the Angels' 25 man roster.  He has demonstrated all he needs to at the minor league level and, at 26 years old, is entering the prime productive years of his career.  Monitor his progress this spring as well as rumblings within the Angels organization as to the 2009 role for Sandoval.  He has the makings of a highly productive utility player who can admirably fill a variety of roles and is ready to produce right away.  He should get more of a chance at some point in 2009.

Tyler Sample – Kansas City Royals RHP

H/W:  6-7  245 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  6/27/89

The Royals' 3rd rounder was exactly as advertised in his professional debut with K.C.'s Arizona League affiliate going 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA and a caustic 29 BB/39 K ratio in 27 IP.  Equipped with a fastball that reaches 96 MPH, the mammoth-sized right hander pitches downhill toward hitters forcing ground ball outs at a copious 2.60/FO rate.  His nasty 12-6 curveball has the potential to be an elite strikeout pitch, but his third pitch, a changeup, is in its infant stages of development.  Sample has emerged healthy from a 2006 Tommy John surgery, but he has been in a perpetual struggle to harness control over his plus offerings.  He walked hitters at an alarming 9.7/9 IP rate and surrendered a .270 BAA in his 10 outings last season.  Despite his struggles with command, Sample seems to have a good amount of poise on the mound even with runners on base. The Royals knew that they were drafting a project player in Sample, and seem comfortable with taking time to slowly bring him along as a starter.

2009 Projection: Sample is not ready for full season ball yet.  Expect him to get some serious TLC with the Royals instructional staff at extended spring training before heading to Idaho Falls in June.  It goes without saying that contol is the thing to monitor in Sample's game.  If and when it improves, Sample has the ability to be a dominant pitcher.  Expect his numbers to improve significantly this season, and watch to see if he can keep up his excellent K/9 IP ratio and GO/FO numbers.

Nicholas Barnese – Tampa Bay Rays RHP

H/W:  6-2  170 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  1/11/89

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to be a tremendous success story, transforming their farm system and major league roster from futility to fortune in just one year's time.  Longoria, Price, and Upton, and Garza have become household names, while pitching prospects Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, and Jake McGee loom as potential stars on the imminent horizon.  Nicholas Barnese is quite a ways behind them in development but not in talent.

With a lively 91-93 MPH fastball and power slurve, Nicholas Barnese overpowered hitters at short season Low-A Hudson Valley last season going 5-3 with a 2.45 ERA and 24 BB/84 K in 66 innings.  Nicholas is a confident and aggressive pitcher with a mean streak on the mound.  He goes right after hitters, pounding all quadrants of the strike zone and challenging hitters on the inner half of the plate.  A changeup is currently in the works for Barnese and, while hie throws it with a good arm speed, its command and movement lags behind his other two quality offerings.  Barnese has some projectibility left in his frame that could build a little more bulk and velocity within the next year or two.  If it comes, his overall skill set will closely resemble that of current Ray hurler Matt Garza.

2009 Projection: Barnese will get a taste of full season ball at Low-A Bowling Green.  Barnese seemingly came out of nowhere to post his solid numbers last season.  Watch to see if he can sustain that success over a full season.  His frame is still a bit slender, which could deter from his durability.  His changeup is an essential component to his ability to continue progressing as a starter.  With so many fine young arms in the Rays organization, Barnese has been able to fly under the radar and exceed expectations.  That could come to a close soon.  A big 2009 season from Nick should vault him into the same conversation as names like Davis, McGee, and Hellickson.

Niko Vasquez – St. Louis Cardinals SS

H/W:  5-11  175 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  2/26/89

Drafted in the 3rd round last year, Vasquez signed early and immediately put up some solid numbers at short season Low-A Johnson City, batting .317 with 4 HR 25 RBI 8 SB and 42 runs scored in 55 games.  His fine performance earned him a promotion to Low-A Quad Cities where he promptly struggled, managing just 5 hits in 39 AB.  Vasquez has power that belies his demure build.  He generates tremendous torque with his quick right-handed swing that prompts some scouts to speculate that he can become a 20-25 HR hitter at the major league level.  He has shown the ability to take a walk and work deep into counts, but his K rate is too high (69 K in 66 games) for someone with his average power numbers.  Defensively, Vasquez has below average speed, but his sure hands and strong accurate arm mitigate errors and should allow for him to stay at the position throughout his development.

2009 Projection: Vasquez should get another shot at Quad Cities and should put up better numbers.  Monitor the power progress and also his ability to mitigate his K totals.  If he doesn't, he will see a precipitous drop in his batting average numbers. The Redbirds have slick fielding Pete Kozma tabbed as their SS of the future which could mean that Vasquez may need to move to 3B down the road.  His arm and good instincts would make him a good fit, but the power would need to progress to a more acceptable level in order to ensure his long term viability at that position.

Mitch Canham – San Diego Padres C

H/W:  6-2  215 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  9/25/84

The former Oregon State Beaver continued to solidify himself as a lethal offensive weapon at the catching position hitting .285 with 8 HR 81 RBI 28 doubles and 13 SB at HIgh-A Lake Elsinore.  Thick and very strong, Canham employs a quick and fluid left handed swing to drive balls with power to the alleys.  His 66 BB/73 K ratio further confirms his highly polished approach at the plate and his ability to maintain a high rate of contact.  Canham can run as well, swiping 13 bags in 14 tries, and he aggressively seeks to take the extra bag at every opportunity.  Defensively, he is lauded for his leadership skills, but all other aspects of his game behind the plate are a work in progress.  He threw out only 30 of 161 base stealers and allowed 21 passed balls.  As a former third baseman, he is athletic behind the plate, but is still learning many of the nuances of the position.

2009 Projection: Canham's bat should allow for him to receive ample opportunities to develop defensively but, at age 24, he needs to do so soon.  Mitch will start the '09 season at AA San Antonio and should play there for most, if not all, of the season.  Keep an eye on his power numbers, there is room for growth and given his speed numbers, he could offer an intriguing blend of speed and power at the catching position reminiscent of L.A. Dodgers All-Star Russell Martin.  Defensively, he is considerably behind Martin's excellence.  This will be an area to monitor as well, especially in his PB numbers and ability to gun down base stealers with more frequency.  If he cannot make significant strides this season, the Padres may be forced to examine other defensive options for him.

Jeremy Hefner – San Diego Padres RHP

H/W:  6-4  215 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  3/11/86

The Oral Roberts alum increased his stock significantly with an excellent showing at Low-A Fort Wayne last season going 10-5 with a 3.33 ERA and 43 BB/150 K in 145 IP.  Hefner controls his three pitches quite well, an 89-91 MPH fastball, a sweeping slider, and a heavy changeup that he uses effectively against LH hitters.  Hefner pounds all quadrants of the strike zone with excellent command, though his stuff is not overpowering and, with the exception of his change, lacks the deceptive movement that he'll need to be effective against more advanced hitters.  Hefner is a cerebral competitor who has a heightened concept of how to get hitters out and his competitive demeanor helps him get the most out of his stuff on the hill.   There is some projectibility left in his tall, strong body that could continue his trend to add more velocity to his heater.  That would serve him well as he progresses.

2009 Projection: Hefner got a brief glimpse of High-A ball with his one outing at Lake Elsinore.   He will be pitching there quite a bit more this season.  The California League should provide a good test for Hefner's progress as a pitching prospect.  He has been working on a two seam fastball to incorporate more movement on his pitches.  If he can effectively mix that with his heavy change, there is ample reason to believe that he will continue to have success in 2009.  Watch his GO/FO ratio as it was under 1.00 last year.  Also keep an eye on his ability to dominate hitters.  His averaged more than a K/9 innings last season, but he will be hard pressed to continue that trend as he advances.  Hefner has three solidly commandable pitches that should serve him well in the #3 or #4 spot in a MLB rotation someday.

Tyler Chatwood – L.A. Angels RHP

H/W:  5-11  175 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  12/16/89

Chatwood dominated hitters in the Arizona Rookie League last season pitching to a 1-2 record with a 3.08 ERA and 48 K's in just 38 innings.  Hitters mustered a paltry .195 BA against him and he was able to induce 2.35 GO/FO.  As dominant as he was, his control was a major concern as Chatwood walked 4 or more batters in 7 of his 11 starts.  An electric 92-94 MPH fastball thrown from a high arm angle allows for him to keep a good downard plane on the ball, making it heavier to hit.  Complimenting his heater is a big breaking curveball that has all the makings of a strikeout pitch as Tyler is already able to command it and use good arm speed to deceive hitters.  His changeup is a potential third pitch, but it is far away from the other ones.  Mechanically, Chatwood has good arm action, but needs to continue to use his legs to drive more of his velocity.  This will help him avoid injury and, perhaps add a tick or two to the velocity of his fastball.

2009 Projection: Full season Low-A Cedar Rapids is the next stop for the Chatwood express.  Expect him to carry forward the high GO/FO rate, but a repeat of 2.35 is highly unlikely.  That would mean that the control numbers would need to drastically improve in order for Chatwood to avoid experiencing some major struggles in his development.  The evolution of the changeup will be a key for his success in sticking as a starting pitcher.  He has a small frame and two MLB plus pitches.  If things don't work out for him as a starter, he could be a good option as a late inning reliever down the road.

Jordan Danks – Chicago White Sox OF

H/W:  6-5  205 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  8/7/86

The White Sox were elated to see the lanky Longhorn fall to them in the 5th round of the 2008 draft.  Immediately after signing, Danks was sent to full season Low-A Kanapolis where he batted .325 with 2 HR 7 RBI and 10 runs scored in 10 games.  He continued to impress during his brief stint in the Arizona Fall League hitting .302 with a HR 7 RBI and 3 SB in 18 games.  Long and lean, Danks has excellent athleticism and speed that serves him well in CF and on the bases.  Coming out of high school, Danks was projected to develop into a power hitter, but that skill never manifested itself during his time with the University of Texas.  Instead, he employs a short, quick stroke from the left side which produces hits to the gaps and the occasional long ball.  Danks allows for the ball to travel deep into the strike zone which gives him a little more time to see a pitch.  As a result, his plate discipline is quite advanced and he feels comfortable working deep into counts.  There is quite a bit of projectibility left in his frame and with some adjustments to his swing, he could become more of a power hitter in the future.

2009 Projection: Danks' build and overall game is almost identical to Cincinnati Reds prospect and fellow Longhorn Drew Stubbs.  The White Sox will probably send him to High-A Winston-Salem for the start of the '09 season and if things go well, a move to AA Birmingham is by no means out of the question.  Watch to see how Danks' game evolves this season.  He is a player that could develop as a tall, athletic top of the order player a la Dexter Fowler or he could tap into his power potential and become more of a mid-lineup player that hits 20+ HR per season.  Either way, Jordan has an exciting batch of skills that should continue to bloom over the next couple of seasons as he works his way to meet up with his brother, John, in Chicago.

Bryan Anderson – St. Louis Cardinals C

H/W:  6-1  190 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  12/16/86

The Cardinals top catching prospect continued to sting the ball at AA Springfield and AAA Memphis in '08 hitting .308 with 4 HR 41 RBI and 18 doubles in just 92 games.  Anderson has a sweet lefthanded swing that produces line drives to the gaps and down both lines.  His excellent hand-eye coordination makes him a difficult hitter to strike out and his solid game plan at the plate allows him to be more disciplined than many young hitters.  Defensively, Anderson has continued to make improvements, throwing out 37% of potential basestealers last season and earning a respectable .986 fielding percentage.  Pitchers love throwing to Anderson and much praise has been heaped upon him for his game calling techniques and ability to handle a pitching staff.  The big knock on Anderson, thusfar, has been his lack of power.  Bryan has never socked more than six HR in one season as a professional despite having a seemingly strong frame.  Much of this has to do with the fact that Anderson's swing trajectory is more condusive to hitting line drives, and a slight leverage producing alteration may change that in subsequent seasons.  The Redbirds have to be pleased with the rapid development of their 22 year old catcher of the future and his time should come very soon.

2009 Projection: Anderson will get a good lookover by the Cardinals this spring, but a shift back to Memphis to play every day is more probable.  The Cards are fairly well set behind the dish with Yadier Molina in the fold through at least 2011, which indicates that a trade to another organization may be Bryan's best shot to play in the major leagues on a regular basis.  The key for him this season is to drive the ball with more XBH authority while maintaining his high batting average.  Anderson will make his MLB debut at some point in 2009 either as a backup to Molina or with another ball club.

Adam Miller – Cleveland Indians RHP

H/W:  6-4 200 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  11/26/84

In an all too disturbing trend, Adam Miller's 2008 season was limited to just 6 games due to nagging injuries in, of all places, his fingers.  Miller tore a tendon in his finger that required surgery and months of rehab.  This latest digital malady followed the strains in his tendons and, gulp, holes in his skin that plagued him throughout the 2007 season.  When healthy, Miller deals some serious heat, sporting a fastball that touches 100 MPH on the radar gun.  Complimenting that is a high 80's violent slider that has all the makings of a knockout pitch.  Miller locates both plus pitches well to all parts of the zone.  Miller's third pitch, a changeup, shows some promise, but his time away has kept him from refining his arm speed and slot for the pitch.  The best bet scenario for Miller at this point seems to be as a late inning reliever, and eventually a closer.  This would limit the amount of duress that he would put his arm and fingers through while making the best use of his two plus-plus pitches.  The Indians have not ruled out the notion of eventually transitioning him back to starting games.  Miller is just 24 years old and still full of potential to be an elite pitcher at either the front or back ends of games.

2009 Projection: Miller has kept his velocity up during his healthy Dominican Winter League stretch.  The Indians signed Kerry Wood in the off season to fulfill the role of closer, but the door has been left wide open for Miller to nestle into the set up role and, eventually, the closer role.  Undoubtedly, health is key for Miller's success.  Fortunately, the injuries he suffered are not ones that put unnecessary mileage on his arm.  If Adam struggles in the early going with his command, the Tribe may decide to send him to AAA Buffalo for some more work.  He will be with the big club at some point this season and should delight the Jacobs Field masses with his own three digit version of "Radar Love"

Devaris Strange-Gordon – L.A. Dodgers SS

H/W:  5-11  150 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  4/22/88

The son of 19 year MLB veteran Tom Gordon got off to a blazing start to his professional career, hitting .331 with 2 HR 27 RBI 18 SB and 45 runs scored in 60 games.  World class speed is Gordon's best weapon, as his 6.35 time in the 60 yard dash makes him the fastest player in the L.A. Dodgers organization.  Gordon slashes line drives through holes and down lines which, combined with his advanced bunting skills and plate discipline, makes him a game changing, top of the order hitter.  Gordon's excellent speed allows for him to cover a wide range on the left side of the infield and his strong arm allows for him to make throws from deep in the hole.   Gordon is built like his father, which means that he should never become a big power hitter, but there is some projectibilty in his sinewy frame for more XBH power to develop.  The upside for Gordon to be an impact player is far from being reached.  With his bloodlines, athleticism, and considerable makeup, Devaris is one of the more intriguing prospects to watch in 2009.

2009 Projection: The superb numbers that Gordon put up at Ogden earns him a promotion to Low-A Great Lakes to start the season.  Ogden has served as a hitter friendly environment for several years and many a player has suffered markedly poorer numbers in seasons following.  Gordon should buck that trend.  His exceptional hand-eye coordination and blazing speed makes him averse to prolonged slumps.  Watch the XBH numbers this season.  Gordon will never be a double digit HR hitter, but his ability to drive more balls into the gaps will allow for him to get into scoring position more often.  Also, expect the SB numbers to rise dramatically this season to be at or near the top of all of MILB in 2009.  Gordon has the potential to be one of the best leadoff hitters in all of the minor leagues in '09 and beyond.

Billy Rowell – Baltimore Orioles

H/W:  6-5  205 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  9/10/88

Despite a disappointing statistical 2008 season at High-A Frederick (.248 7 HR 50 RBI 24 doubles), there are some positive things to take out of Rowell's development.  He cut his K rate down to less than one per game while boosting his walk totals from 31 in '07 to 36.  The former AFLAC High School All-American also improved defensively, boosting his fielding percentage from .888 to .925.  Rowell has big time power potential and a sweet left-handed swing that should hit for a good average as well.  His bat speed is well above average and his competitive drive should compell him to make the necessary improvements in his approach at the plate to make the necessary improvements in his plate discipline.  In light of his improvements, there is some concern about Rowell's ability to remain a third baseman.  His size and footspeed may prove to be detrimental to his range and a future on the other infield corner seems to be a more likely destination.  There is still a great deal of projectibility in this young 20 year old, and the Orioles have no doubt that it will manifest itself into on-field production very soon.

2009 Projection: Rowell's stint at Frederick was somewhat lackluster and, given his age, an encore appearance their to begin the season seems to be the most prudent  short term option.  Keep tabs on the power numbers from Mr. Rowell this season.  If he can find translate that sweet swing into some long balls, a promotion to AA Bowie in the second half is not out of the question.  The primary goal for both Billy Rowell and the Orioles, however, should be to put 2008 in the rear view mirror and start cultivating the abundance of potential that made Rowell a 2006 1st round pick.  There are plenty of reasons to believe that will happen in 2009.

Gorkys Hernandez – Atlanta Braves OF

H/W:  6-0  175 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  9/7/87

Hernandez put up another solid season at High-A Myrtle Beach despite missing a month with a hamstring injury.  The effects of that setback had a slightly detrimental effect on his numbers, but Gorkys still managed to hit .263 with 5 HR 42 RBI 20 SB and 75 runs in 100 games.  When fully healthy, Hernandez has as much speed as anyone in the Braves' system and he uses it effectively on the bases.  He seems to be discovering his decent power potential as well.  Hernandez had 34 XBH in '08 and he has continued to improve his plate discipline, earning a 48 BB/79 K ratio.  Defensively, the Braves are loaded with high upside outfielders, but no one in the system has as much top of the order potential as the 21 year old Venezuelan.

2009 Projection: Hernandez should be ready to return to his basestealing ways at AA Mississippi in April.  Keep an eye on the stolen base totals, as his ability to wreak havoc on the basepaths is what sets him apart from other offensive talents in the Braves' system.  Watch his power development as well.  Hernandez has some power to the gap, and has some potential for growth left in his frame that could translate to double digit HR's down the road.

Wendell Fairley – San Francisco Giants

H/W:  6-2  190 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  3/17/88

The best athlete of the 2007 draft had a decent debut season with the Giants' Arizona Rookie League hitting .259 with 2 HR 17 RBI 7 SB and 39 runs scored in 50 games.  Fairley has all of the physical tools to be an elite prospect in the near future.  His bat speed ranks amongst the best in the Giants system and he projects to hit for both power and average as he ages.  He uses his speed aggressively on the basepaths and in CF where he covers wide swathes of real estate.  His arm can play at any OF spot and he has shown the ability to read the ball well off of the bat.  One pleasant surprise was his advanced plate discipline.  Fairley garnered a 26 BB/37 K ratio which boosted his OBP to a respectible .388.  The culpabilities with Wendell have to do with his history of off the field indiscretions that have included alleged assault and and a misdemeanor conviction as a high schooler.  He has appeared to move beyond these problems, though, and has not had any recurrences of problems as a member of the Giants organization.

2009 Projection: Fairley should get his first dose of full season baseball in April when the Giants send him to Low-A Augusta.  The boost in his strike zone discipline is intriguing and it remains to be seen if this trend can continue.  The power should kick in at some point as well.  There are plenty of reasons to believe that Fairley can evolve into a 20 HR 20 SB player at the major league level within the next three to four seasons.  The San Francisco Giants are loaded with high upside talent on the mound and in the field.  It is just a matter of time before this organization ascends to the top of the N.L. West and Fairley will be a big part of that future.
