Sawyer Carroll – San Diego Padres OF

H/W:  6-4  210 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  5/9/86

The Padres continued to add to their treasure trove of highly disciplined collegiate hitters by selecting this University of Kentucky alum in the 3rd round of the '08 draft.  Carroll has a power hitter's build but is more of a gap to gap hitter whose power should top out at 15-20 HR per season.  After adding 20 lbs. of muscle to his long frame, Carroll had an immensely successful senior season with the Wildcats that saw him hit .419 with 19 HR 83 RBI and 69 runs scored.   Carroll then signed quickly with the Padres and then split time his time between short season Eugene and Low-A Fort Wayne, hitting .278 with 8 HR 47 RBI and 46 runs scored in 64 games.  Carroll employs a disciplined approach at the plate, working deep into counts, drawing walks or driving balls in all parts of the strike zone.  Defense was a concern area prior to Carroll's senior season as he was profiled to be a below average first baseman, but he seems to have added some athleticism with his gain in strength and has shown an aptitude to play either corner OF position as well as 1B.

2009 Projection: Carroll's start to the '09 season has been excellent as he is hitting .320 with 20 RBI  9 SB and 9 doubles through his first 29 games.  Additionally, he has earned a respectable 22 BB/20 K ratio and has become Fort Wayne's #3 hitter in the lineup.   At 22 years old, he is a bit old for this level and, given his early success, it seems that a promotion to High-A Lake Elsinore will happen at some point this season.  One thing to take notice of is his lack of power output to date.  Prior to his senior season, several scouts were concerned that it would not manifest itself at the wooden bat level and those concerns seem to be coming to fruition at this point.  Keep an eye on these numbers as the season progresses.  It is difficult to ascertain at this time where Carroll fits into the organization's plans.  With so many talented outfielders like Kellen Kulbacki, Jaff Decker, Cedric Hunter, Luis Durango, Chad Huffman, Blake Tekotte and Yefri Carvajal, Carroll has considerable obstacles to overcome in order to win a shot at a full time position with the Padres.  Assuredly, there will be some maneuvering done in the future as the team looks to pursue some pitching within the next season or two.  Each transaction involving members of the fore-mentioned parties will be effective in shuffling the organization's depth chart and future plans.

Logan Forsythe – San Diego Padres 3B

H/W:  6-1  185 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  1/14/87

The Padres drafted the former Arkansas Razorback as the third of seven consecutive offensive player selected in the '08 draft.  Forsythe was limited to just 12 games late last summer with the Padres' short season affiliates, but the club felt confident that his polish shown in college would allow for him to transition smoothly to High-A ball.  It indeed has as Forsythe hit .320 with 3 HR 11 RBI and 25 runs scored through his first 29 games.  Extremely disciplined at the plate, Forsythe has a fluid right-handed swing that drives the ball well to the gaps with good XBH power and the occasional homerun.  He makes good contact with the ball and has a good game plan during each plate appearance.  Normally a third baseman, Forsythe is also skilled enough to play just about any position in the field adeptly, making him an excellent utility player.  Though he is not a speed guy, Logan runs the bases with a good deal of intelligence and determination, allowing him to manufacture runs in many different ways.

2009 Update: As stated before, Forsythe seems to be handling the challenge of High-A ball well in his first full professional season.  He is currently batting in the #5 hole for Lake Elsinore and has collected 11 XBH and 27 BB in his first 29 games.  Forsythe is someone who's value may not always be recognized statistically as he does so many little things well.  He should, though, be a solid #2 or #6 hitter at the major league level who hits 10-15 HR per season while posting an OB% that rivals .400.  The Padres are building something special within their organization as they have drafted a ton of high-discipline, mid-ceiling players that should be solid role players as professionals and Logan Forsythe fits right in with that philosophy.  With Kevin Kouzmanoff manning the hot corner for the next few seasons, there is no immediate need to rush Forsythe's development.  He should play most or all of the season at High-A with an MLB ETA of 2011.  By that time, it will be about time for the Friars to decide what to do with Kouzmanoff's upcoming free agent contract.  With no other big time third basemen in the system, Forsythe has a genuine opportunity to be groomed as San Diego's next keeper of the hot corner.

Matthew Sweeney – L.A. Angels 3B

H/W:  6-3  215 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  4/4/88

The Angels' former 8th round selection missed all of the 2008 season with an ankle injury after a largely successful 2007 at Low-A Cedar Rapids where he hit .260 with 18 HR 72 RBI and 29 doubles.  Matthew Sweeney has as much power potential as anyone in the Angels' system not named Brandon Wood.  His smooth left-handed swing generates easy power to all fields and has the potential to hit for a high average as well.  He has natural loft to his swing and seems to make solid contact with balls in the strike zone.  One area of his offensive game that will continually need work is his ability to effectively work deep into counts.  He walked just 38 times versus 88 strikeouts in 2007 and should prove to be a more dangerous hitter if he can boost his walk totals by 25-30.  Defensively, he is somewhat heavy footed, but has soft hands and good first step range to both his left and right.  His arm is plenty strong to handle any throws from the hot corner, though his 28 errors in '07 indicate that he still needs to control it and make more strides toward consistently making the routine plays.

2009 Projection: Sweeney has gotten off to an excellent start at High-A Rancho Cucamonga, hitting .375 with 3 HR 11 RBI and 7 doubles in his first 11 games.  The biggest thing to watch out of Matthew is his ability to play the '09 season in good health.  He looks like he is completely healthy, but ankle injuries, like so many other maladies, tend to become chronic problems that have detrimental effects on promising careers.  Also keep tabs on his defensive performance.  If he continues to post sub-.900 fielding percentages, there is a distinct chance that he could shift to the other infield corner or to a corner outfield spot a la Ryan Braun.  Over a full season, Sweeney is a 25-30 HR hitter and a potential middle of the lineup hitter at the major league level.  The Angels have Brandon Wood ahead of Sweeney on the organization's 3B depth chart, but lots can happen within the next couple of seasons.  Sweeney's bat should place him somewhere.

Brandon Crawford – San Francisco Giants SS

H/W:  6-2  200 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  1/21/87

The Giants selected the former UCLA Bruin in the 4th round of the 2008 draft.  After a junior season that saw him hit .302 with 7 HR 51 RBI and 11 SB, he has turned up his production a notch as a member of the San Jose Giants by hitting .395 with 3 HR 8 RBI and 10 runs scored in his first 12 games.  Crawford has good size and strength for a shortstop with excellent pull power and above average speed.  He had some problems with getting pull happy as a collegiate player, and he is currently averaging about a strikeout per game with San Jose.  Defensively, Crawford has decent range and good arm strength, though there are some concerns that he has apexed physically and may lose a step or two in the next few seasons.  Last season's struggles with the Bruins seemed to affect his confidence on both offense and defense, but his quick start this season serves as evidence that he has put that behind him and is allowing his natural abilities to dictate his performance.  He is a heady player who competes well and carries a cerebral approach to all aspects of his game.

2009 Projection: Crawford should play most or all of the season at High-A San Jose alongside mega-talents like Buster Posey, Angel Villalona, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Alderson, Connor Gillaspie, and Nick Noonan.  Crawford has enough talent and polish to be a starting shortstop at the major league level within the next two seasons, but there is still some work to do.  His strikeout rate is too high and he has yet to show an ability to put up a respectable BB/K ratio since he first set foot on UCLA's campus.  The grind of a major league season has multiple periods of highs and lows and there has already been criticism of his ability to play with a high level of confidence during slumping periods.  If he can move beyond this, he is a 15-20 HR hitter with double digit steal potential.  Currently, Emmanuel Burriss is the only viable SS prospect ahead of him on San Francisco's organizational depth chart and current Giants SS Edgar Renteria really has just two or three more productive seasons left.  Crawford is someone to watch in an organization that is rapidly becoming one of baseball's best and brightest.

Rolando Gomez – L.A. Angels SS

H/W:  5-7  145 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  6/18/89

If good things come in small packages, then the Angels will be quite pleased with their 3rd round pick from the '08 draft.  Gomez played in four games with the Angels' Arizona Rookie League affiliate managing just two hits in 15 AB.  Despite his demure build, Gomez has a sharp, line drive bat that can power balls to the gaps for doubles and the occasional long ball.  He plays the game with savviness and grit that exceeds the range of his skills.  He has a strong arm and soft hands that fit well at shortstop, though there is some conjecture that his fringe-average range could fit better at second base.  Gomez has gotten pull-happy at times, seemingly to compensate for his slight build, but there is enough projection in his body to believe that he will develop more strength, perhaps alleviating his compulsion to overswing from time to time.

2009 Projection:Limited exposure and limited success should force Gomez to start his '09 season at extended spring training before heading out to Orem in June.  Keep an eye on the development of Gomez's offensive game.  Has the ability to hit for a high average with 5-10 HR power, but it may take a while for it to develop.  If he can stick at SS, his chances of reaching the major leagues with the Angels is a bit better as the road ahead of him is not quite as congested.  Long term, he will need to build some more strength to become a serious consideration as an MLB regular.  It could happen, but the league is full of SS prospects with much higher upsides.

Pablo Sandoval – San Francisco Giants 3B/1B

H/W:  5-11  245 lb.     B/T:  S/R     DOB:  8/11/86

The switch hitting former catcher broke out in a big way in 2008, tormenting pitchers at both High-A San Jose and AA Connecticut for a .350 BA with 20 HR 96 RBI, 90 runs scored and 38 doubles in just 112 games.  Sandoval earned a promotion to San Francisco where he didn't miss a beat, hitting .345 with 3 HR 24 RBI and 10 doubles in 145 AB.  Sandoval has a lightning-quick bat that produces easy power from both sides of the plate.  He makes excellent contact, but doesn't work counts as effectively as someone with his potent bat should.  Last season Sandoval combined to walk just 35 times in nearly 600 AB.  Defensively, the rotund Sandoval is quite mobile at both infield corner positions, earning just one error in 179 chances.  He has excellent arm strength and soft hands ideal for the hot corner.

2009 Projection: All signs point to Sandoval having a huge first full season as a major leaguer.  He has hit almost .450 this spring with excellent XBH power and solid plate discipline.  The main concern with Sandoval going forward will be his weight, as heavier set players have increased difficulties staying healthy over the course of a 162 game season.  His bat, though, is for real and has all the look and functionality of a switch-hitting Edgar Martinez.  The Giants are an organization filled with younger talent waiting to blossom.  Sandoval will be one of the parties leading the charge very soon.

Aaron Cunningham – Oakland A’s OF

H/W:  5-11  205 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  4/24/86

Shipped over from the Diamondbacks in the Dan Haren trade, Cunningham is precisely the type of player that A's GM Billy Beane loves. He pounded pitching at both AA Midland and AAA Sacramento to the tune of a .329 BA with 17 HR 66 RBI 15 SB and 86 runs scored.  He recorded another 80 AB with Oakland, hitting .250 with a HR and 14 RBI.  With excellent hand-eye coordination and a compact right handed swing, Aaron generates decent pop that should produce 10-15 HR per season at the major league level.  His speed is above average and he uses it savvily in the outfield and on the basepaths, where he should average double digit stolen base numbers.  Cunningham has shown solid plate discipline throughout his minor league career, though these numbers have eroded somewhat as he has advanced.  At 23 years old, there is not too much room for further projection in Cunningham's game, though he has given enough reason to believe that he can be a fairly productive regular at the major league level.

2009 Projection: The trade for Matt Holliday has muddied the waters in Oakland's outfield scenerio.  Aaron has had a solid showing this spring and has earned some serious consideration for a major role in either RF or CF.  So have, however, Travis Buck, Ryan Sweeney, Rajai Davis, and Chris Denorfia.  Being the youngest of this crop, it seems quite likely that Cunningham will be ticketed for AAA at the start of the '09 season, where he will stay until room is made for him by way of injury, non-performance, or trade.  Cunningham has some upside as a future MLB regular, but the odds of him becoming one of those "lost in the shuffle" guys increases with every minor league AB.

Clark Murphy – Texas Rangers 1B

H/W:  6-2  190 lb.     B/T:  L/L     DOB:  12/18/89

The Rangers decided to add to their 1B depth with the selection on the Californian prep slugger in the 5th round of the '08 draft.  Clark Murphy performed quite well in his first professional action with the Rangers' Arizona Rookie League affiliate, hitting .358 with a HR 21 RBI and 7 doubles in 25 games.  Murphy has a rock solid frame and fluid left-handed swing that has already demonstrated good power with wooden bats.  His hands move quickly through the ball and he exhibits solid plate discipline (12 BB/19 K in 25 games).  Though he is now fully recovered from his quad injury, Murphy still exhibits below average foot speed which should limit his defensive abilities to 1B as a pro.  He has exhibited above average footwork and agility around the bag.  His arm is more than strong enough for the position as he was an outfielder as a prep player.  There are still some mechanical glitches to iron out in his swing.  He has a little hitch that occasionally throws off his timing and affects his ability to make consistent contact.  This should be something that is completely rectified, allowing for him to more effectively stay back on balls and tap into his considerable raw power.

2009 Projection: Murphy should start at full season Low-A Hickory with future All-Star 1B Justin Smoak beginning at High-A Bakersfield.  The thing to watch in Murphy is his power numbers.  The odds are good that he will increase his HR output this season, but will it come at the expense of his BB/K ratio?  Murphy is stuck in an offensively loaded farm system with exceptional depth at the 1B and OF positions.  Expect the Rangers to bring Murphy along at a prudent pace.  If he continues to produce good offensive numbers, there is a good chance that he could be a valuable commodity when the Rangers start looking to add to their pitching depth.  Given Texas' rapidly improving odds as a playoff contender, this could happen sooner rather than later.

Matt Tuiasosopo – Seattle Mariners 3B

H/W:  6-2  220 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  5/10/86

It seems as if the former 2004 3rd rounder has been toiling in the Seattle Mariners farm system forever, but the fact remains that Tuiasosopo will be just 22 years old on opening day.  A former top quarterback recruit at the University of Washington, Tuiasosopo is athletic and very strong.  He began his career as a raw project and has slowly begun to develop his skills.  He is remarkably agile in the field and should be an above average defensive 3B.  His bat is showing signs of life as well.  Until recently, he had worked on being a better contact hitter, allowing balls to travel deeper into the zone before inside-outing them to the opposite field, but he showed an increase in power production over the second half of the '08 season at AAA Tacoma and has drove the ball with authority during his spring training outings this season.  Plate discipline continues to be an issue that Matt needs to refine.  Last season he walked 49 times while striking out 120 times between Tacoma and Seattle.  His work ethic and makeup, however, continue to be catalysts that fuel his rapid improvement and when blended with his strength and athleticism, they should propel him to much greater accomplishments in the years to come.

2009 Projection: Tui has opened some eyes within the organization this spring.  The M's are at a crossroads as Adrian Beltre's impending free agency and near certain departure from the team looms large.  There is talent at the lower levels in the form of Jharmidy DeJesus, Mario Martinez and, perhaps, Carlos Triunfel, but there is no one other than Matt Tuiasosopo to fill Beltre's shoes for the next couple of seasons.  This is a big year for Matt to make the developmental jump from prospect to major league player.  Beltre's presence in the middle of the M's lineup and his Gold Glove at the hot corner should force Tuiasosopo back to Tacoma for more everyday work.  Watch the power numbers and plate discipline.  If Tui can continue his hot hitting, a mid-season trade of Beltre will become a greater reality.

Michael Main – Texas Rangers RHP

H/W:  6-2  170 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  12/14/88

Michael Main pitched like a 1st rounder last season, combining to go 3-3 with a 2.76 ERA and 13 BB/65 K per 58.2 IP between Texas' Arizona Rookie League affiliate and full season Low-A Clinton.  A nationally renowned two way player as a high schooler, Main is a very good athlete who features a 92-94 MPH fastball and high 70's power curve to strike out hitters in bunches.  His changeup is a bit raw at this time and his curveball can be inconsistent at times.  Main tends to be a flyball pitcher, which is a dangerous proposition when the Ballpark in Arlington is your future home.  That said, he commands his fastball very well and attacks hitters with great confidence.  His frame is strong for its size and should project to build some more bulk as he matures.  This should help him to add stamina and, perhaps, a couple of digits to the velocity to his already plus fastball.

2009 Projection: The Rangers are overflowing with top quality arms in their farm system with Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland, Martin Perez, Blake Beavan, Kasey Kiker, and Neil Ramirez.  Main fits right in the middle of that list, but his curveball and changeup need to develop more consistency or else he could find himself being developed as a power reliever.  Keep an eye on this as he pitches at High-A Bakersfield this year.  The California League is a difficult one for young pitchers, especially young flyball pitchers.  If he can develop some more depth to his offspeed offerings, he should be able to avoid some of the attrition that seems to be awaiting him.  If not, he could struggle with this promotion and find himself back at Clinton.  Long term, his highly valuable arm will play in the major leagues in some capacity.

Blake Beavan – Texas Rangers RHP

H/W:  6-7  210 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  1/17/89

The Rangers' 2007 1st rounder pitched well in his first full season at Low-A Clinton.  Blake Beavan went 10-6 with a 2.37 ERA and 20 BB/73 K in 121.2 IP.  With his imposing frame and 95 MPH heat, Beavan has the ability to impose his will on hitters, yet he didn't miss as many bats as prognosticated.  Part of this could be attributed to alterations to his funky pitching mechanics and, given his size and strength, it is conceivable that the velocity could return.  His two plane slider has the ability to develop into a strikeout pitch that would serve him well as a starter or make him a dominant closer.  He carries himself with a great deal of confidence on the mound and is regarded as being a fiery, sometimes too much so, competitor.  Beavan is a durable pitcher who, with improved mechanics, could be a inning eating workhorse.

2009 Projection: The Rangers seem to have there minds set on developing Blake Beavan as a starting pitcher , at least for the time being.  At this point his demeanor and potentially dominant two pitches seem better suited for the bullpen.  The dip in his fastball's velocity is a concern.  Keep an eye on this development as well as Beavan's starts at High-A Bakersfield.  If he continues to live at 91-92 MPH, he could struggle and may need to head back to the Rangers' new Low-A affiliate Hickory.

J.A. Happ – Philadelphia Phillies LHP

H/W:  6-6  200 lb.     B/T:  L/L     DOB:  10/19/82

The Northwestern alum has had a slow road to the major leagues, but his third go around at AAA ball was his best as he went 8-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 151 K's in 138 IP.  He also performed well during his 8 game stint with the Phillies, winning his only decision and striking out 26 in 31.2 IP.  Happ has a good 91-93 MPH fastball with all of the movement that a customary southpaw offers.  Like many lefties, he also has an excellent changeup with good fade and deception.  Happ is a poised and confident pitcher that locates both his fastball and change quite well.  His slider has some promise as well, but it is still a less effective offering than either of his other two pitches.  One of the criticisms of J.A. was his his inability to work deep into games because of his lack of strength and stamina. Happ has a lanky and lean frame, but he doesn't throw downhill on hitters like he should.  This leads to a high rate of fly ball outs which, in Citizen's Bank Ballpark, could be disastrous.

2009 Projection: Happ is in a battle with both Kyle Kendrick and top prospect Carlos Carrasco for the 5th spot in Philly's deep rotation.  Kendrick has been rumored as having the inside track due to his experience, but Happ could land a role in the bullpen as a middle reliever and spot starter.  He has nothing else to prove at the minor league level and, at age 26, his allure as a prospect is fading.  This is a guy who would benefit greatly from a change of scenery.  It is a wonder why he wasn't included in the deal that sent Joe Blanton from the A's to the Phillies last season.  Billy Beane's penchant for LHP and the cavernous catacombs of McAfee Stadium would have made Happ an ideal Oakland Athletic.  Keep an eye on his GO/FO rate.  If he can take a little off of his changeup, he could induce more groundball outs and experience more success with the Phillies.  Philadelphia would really like for Carrasco to fit into their rotation at some point in 2009 which could make Happ the eventual odd man out.  If he his granted a change of scenery, his stock could rise as a #3 or 4 starter in a new organization.  Other than that, there isn't much market demand for a not-so-young middle reliever/spot starter.

Carson Blair – Boston Red Sox C/3B

H/W:  6-1  190 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  10/18/89

Originally a SS in high school, the Red Sox decided to convert their 2008 35th round pick to catcher during the off season.  His brief tenure at the Red Sox GCL affiliate was a successful one as Blair went 9 for 22 with a HR and 9 RBI.  Blair has excellent hand-eye coordination and a quick right handed stroke that projects to have average power at the major league level.  Like many young shortstops, Blair is extremely agile and has above average speed that he utilizes well on the basepaths and in the field.  This agility and quickness should prove to be a benefit behind the plate and his strong arm should also be a viable asset.  The Red Sox are in need of projectible young catchers in their farm system and the depth of SS and 3B prospects throughout their farm system affords them the luxury of making this transition.

2009 Projection: Blair is a project player and the list of 35th round picks that have measurable success at the MLB level is thin. However, the Red Sox have a knack for developing players with projectible tools into solid prospects.  The fact that the talent pool for backstops is thin also bodes well for Carson's chances to succeed.  Keep him on your radar and monitor his offensive numbers this season as he should play at short season Lowell.  If he continues to display good pop and plays some solid defense behind the plate, he could rapidly become known as another Red Sox late round steal.

Chris Withrow – L.A. Dodgers RHP

H/W: 6-3  195 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  4/1/89

2008 was a lost season for the former 1st rounder as a sore elbow caused for the Dodgers to cautiously shelve Withrow until August.  Upon his return, the young righty struggled with his command walking 6 hitters in 4 innings.  Regardless of the injury, there is quite a bit to like in Withrow.  His fastball sits between 91-94 MPH and he has excellent command of both his curveball and changeup.  He throws each pitch with clean mechanics and lively arm action, giving the ball excellent movement and late life.  His frame is strong and projectible, and scouts have raved about his athleticism.  Additionally, he has shown a high acumen for pitching as his father was a standout pitcher for the University of Texas and spent time in the Chicago White Sox organization.  All reports have Withrow ready for the start of the 2009 season, most likely at Low-A Great Lakes.

2009 Projection: Surely the Dodgers will handle Withrow's development with extreme caution.  His athleticism and good mechanics should allow for him to move beyond this early setback, but his health will undoubtedly be the key thing to focus on this season.  There are some other fine arms in the Dodgers' organization (Ethan Martin, Josh Lindblom, Nate Eovaldi) that may get more attention this season, but Withrow's upside is at least as good as any of them and, if healthy, he could be a nice sleeper investment for the long term.

Cody Satterwhite – Detroit Tigers RHP

H/W:  6-4  205 lb.     B/T:  R/R    DOB:  1/27/87

The Detroit Tigers saw projectibility and two MLB-plus pitches when they selected the Ole Miss University hurler in the 2nd round of the '08 draft.  Promptly converted to a late inning reliever, Satterwhite threw 20.2 innings at two stops earning 3 saves, a 3.92 ERA and a 13 BB/24 K ratio.  Satterwhite has an explosive 95 MPH fastball with excellent late movement that moves in on the hands of RH batters.  His slider has high upside with a violent two plane break, but he has had trouble commanding it at times.  He has dabbled with developing a changeup, but it really hasn't taken as of yet.  Satterwhite has a tall, broad frame that still has quite a bit of projectibility left, which leads some to believe that he can tack on some additional ticks to the velocity of his fastball.  His inconsistent delivery and loose mechanics causes him to miss up in the zone quite a bit which makes him hittable and marginalizes his ability to induce groundball outs.  This could serve as a problem at higher levels.  The Tigers are quite enamored with the closer potential of 1st rounder Ryan Perry, and given Satterwhite's young age, there is still some possibility that he could be developed as a starter in the future.

2009 Projection: Satterwhite will get a nice dose of full season ball at High-A Lakeland this season.  The Tigers would like to see him get better command of his off-speed stuff and would like for him to utilize his frame to throw downhill on hitters.  His control numbers are the obvious things to watch, but keep an eye on his FO/GO ratio as well.  If he can bump that up over 1.00 (it was 0.57 last season),  he can rapidly become a dominant reliever.  Relief pitching has been a thorn in the side of the Tigers for the past few seasons, but there is high hopes that the combination of Satterwhite and Ryan Perry could help this club shorten games and put more wins on the scoreboard.

Mark Melancon – New York Yankees RHP

H/W:  6-3  215 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  3/28/85

Tabbed by many as the Yankees' closer of the future, the former Arizona Wildcat did his part to confirm that honored distinction by breezing through three separate minor league stops from High-A Tampa to AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre.  Melancon went 8-1 with a 2.27 ERA and 22 BB/89 K in 95 IP.  His fastball sits at 92-95 MPH and his hammer-like curveball is quite effective at inducing groundball outs (1.54/FO in '08).  Melancon has an intensely competitive demeanor on the mound which goes a long way towards intimidating hitters.  He is a hard worker on and off the field and has all of the intangibles to be a highly successful closer.  Team officials have been concerned about Melancon's strenuous delivery and continue to tinker with it to take some of the effort and stress out of it in order to diminish his risk of injuries in the future.  Mariano Rivera is on the finishing rounds of his legendary career and Melancon is the top candidate to fill a very big pair of shoes.

2009 Projection: While Melancon seems to be ready for a definitive role in the Yankees' bullpen, it is more likely that he will be back at AAA to await his opportunity.  The Yankees seem to be well stocked with good power arms in their bullpen, but a solid spring turned in by Melancon should open some eyes for opportunities later in the season.  His predecessor, Super Mariano, shows no signs of slowing down and the Yankees have him under contract through the 2010 season.  That should give Melancon plenty of time to nestle into a regular relief role with New York, increasing his odds of being the closer for the Bronx Bombers in 2011.

Tyler Sample – Kansas City Royals RHP

H/W:  6-7  245 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  6/27/89

The Royals' 3rd rounder was exactly as advertised in his professional debut with K.C.'s Arizona League affiliate going 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA and a caustic 29 BB/39 K ratio in 27 IP.  Equipped with a fastball that reaches 96 MPH, the mammoth-sized right hander pitches downhill toward hitters forcing ground ball outs at a copious 2.60/FO rate.  His nasty 12-6 curveball has the potential to be an elite strikeout pitch, but his third pitch, a changeup, is in its infant stages of development.  Sample has emerged healthy from a 2006 Tommy John surgery, but he has been in a perpetual struggle to harness control over his plus offerings.  He walked hitters at an alarming 9.7/9 IP rate and surrendered a .270 BAA in his 10 outings last season.  Despite his struggles with command, Sample seems to have a good amount of poise on the mound even with runners on base. The Royals knew that they were drafting a project player in Sample, and seem comfortable with taking time to slowly bring him along as a starter.

2009 Projection: Sample is not ready for full season ball yet.  Expect him to get some serious TLC with the Royals instructional staff at extended spring training before heading to Idaho Falls in June.  It goes without saying that contol is the thing to monitor in Sample's game.  If and when it improves, Sample has the ability to be a dominant pitcher.  Expect his numbers to improve significantly this season, and watch to see if he can keep up his excellent K/9 IP ratio and GO/FO numbers.

Marcus Lemon – Texas Rangers SS

H/W:  5-11 175 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  6/3/88

The son of long time Detroit Tiger OF Chet Lemon had a fine season at High-A Bakersfield hitting .295 with 8 HR 47 RBI 12 SB and 80 runs scored.  Lemon is a good all around athlete with a quick left handed swing that generates good extra base pop for a player of his stature.  Last season Lemon smacked 30 doubles which may indicate that a slight uptick of power could develop, perhaps to double digits.  Marcus made significant strides in improving his plate discipline, working pitchers for a respectible 46 BB/69 K's.  Lemon has above average speed, but he doesn't use it as well as he should on the basepaths.  Over the past two seasons, Lemon has been successful on just 24 of 46 SB attempts.  Defensively, Lemon is a substandard SS, committing 43 errors last season, but those that have watched him play 2B think that he can become a solid defender there.  The one area of Lemon's game that outshines the other is his remarkable makeup and maturity.  Lemon is an intelligent player who works to improve upon his shortcomings.

2009 Projection: Marcus will be challenged to continue his fine progression at AA Frisco.  The numbers that Lemon put up at Bakersfield could have been artificially swollen by the friendly skies of the California League.  Monitor his ability to maintain his solid plate discipline and power numbers.  If he can do so, his chances of evolving into a major league starter will increase.  At this point in time, it appears that Lemon is best suited as a solid MLB utility players - especially given the fact that he is playing in a system that boasts some talent at the middle infield positions.
