Engel Beltre – Texas Rangers OF

H/W:  6-1  170 lb.     B/T:  L/L     DOB:  11/1/89

Of all the pieces sent to the Rangers in the ill-fated Eric Gagne trade, the loss of this young prospect may cause the most pain to the Boston Red Sox.  Beltre passed the test of his first full season of professional baseball with flying colors, hitting .283 with 8 HR 47 RBI 31 SB and 87 runs scored at Low-A Clinton.  The assortment of tools that Beltre boasts are drool-worthy.  His lean frame has wiry, quick twitch strength reminiscent of Chicago Cubs OF Alfsonso Soriano and his plus-plus speed makes him an impact player on the basepaths and in CF.  Defensively, Beltre has elite CF range and an arm that can play well at RF.  Beltre made some positive strides in boosting his batting average by 40 points and cutting back his high strikeout rate, but his 15 BB/105 K ratio shows that he is still culpable to jumping at pitches out of the strike zone which serves as a potentially detrimental factor to his development at more advanced levels.  Given Beltre's youth and physical tools, there is much optimism that he can effectively address these issues in the next couple of seasons.

2009 Projection: Bakersfield is the next logical destination for the young Rangers blue-chipper and, given the hitter-friendly conditions of the California League, it would be reasonable to expect Beltre to put up an impressive stat line.  The Rangers have the luxury to be patient with Beltre's development as their system and current major league roster is chocked full of talented outfielders.  The BB/K ratio is the big thing to watch from Beltre this season.  Also, his 35 combined doubles and triples from last season shows that double digit HR power is on the way.

Denny Almonte – Seattle Mariners OF

H/W:  6-2  190 lb.     B/T:  S/R     DOB:  9/24/88

The M's went out on a limb selecting this young Miami native in the 2nd round of the 2007 draft as many other MLB officials felt that Almonte should have gone in later rounds.  The tools are in place for Almonte to be a 20 HR 20 SB threat at the big league level.  He has plus plus athleticism and his stronger than many scouts thought he would be on draft day.  Last season, Almonte played at Low-A Wisconsin where he hit .249 with 10 HR 51 RBI and 14 SB in 100 games.  Almonte is a switch hitter with good power from the left-hand side and a line drive stroke as a right-hander.  His speed and arm strength make him a plus defender in RF.  The biggest glaring weaknesses in Almonte's game stem from his extreme rawness, as Almonte had a horrible 29 BB/149 K ratio and he was nabbed on 10 of 24 SB attempts.

2009 Projection: Seattle had a history of rushing their prime talents too quickly through their farm system in the Bill Bavasi era.  Now with Jack Zdurencik at the helm, one could only hope that Almonte will be given ample time to refine the multitude of rough spots in his game.  Expect Almonte to begin the M's new Low-A affiliate Clinton.  If he can make strides in his approach at the plate, he may earn a mid-late season promotion to High-A High Desert.  Almonte's a long way from being a bonafide prospect and his future as a MLB regular are more a plausibility than probability at this point.

Neftali Feliz – Texas Rangers RHP

H/W:  6-3  180 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  5/2/88

When it's all said and done, this young righty may end up being the best piece of the prospect-loaded trade that sent Mark Tiexiera to the Atlanta Braves late in 2007.  Feliz was dominant at two levels last season compiling a record of 10-6 with a 2.69 ERA and 153 K's in just 127.1 IP.  What's more, Feliz dominated hitter, holding them to a stingy .201 BA and allowing just 3 HR.  An explosive and seemingly effortless 94-97 MPH fastball that touches 99 on occasion is far and away Feliz's best pitch and his slurvy curve ball has shown some signs of improvement.  Additionally, Neftali is a gifted athlete and has a reputation of being a dilligent worker.  While his control has improved over his '07 numbers, Feliz still needs to establish better command of his off-speed pitches.  His ability to do so will be the main determinant of his future as a top of the rotation starter or dominant closer.  Given his improvement in '08, there are plenty of reasons to believe he will stick as a starter.

2009 Projection: Feliz finished the '08 season at AA Frisco, and it is likely that he will head back there this spring.  The Texas Rangers are in the midst of creating a truly special young team in much the same manner that Tampa Bay did last season.  Their pitching, while immensely talented, is still just too young.  If Feliz can continue to pitch at the same level of dominance that he demonstrated last season, his stay at AA will be a short one.  There is a real possibility that Feliz will crack the Rangers' rotation at some point in '09, which should prove to enhance collectors' interests in his 2008 cards.

Tim Alderson – San Francisco Giants

H/W:  6-7  217 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  11/3/88

While fellow moundsman Madison Bumgarner earned all of the accolades and attention as San Francisco's best minor league pitcher, Alderson quietly compiled a fine first full season of his own.  Pitching exclusively at High-A San Jose, he compiled a 13-4 record with a 2.79 ERA and a stellar 34 BB/124 K ratio in 145 IP.  Alderson has three outstanding pitches to choose from; a 92-94 MPH fastball with good movement, a low-80's curveball with a two plane break, and a solid changeup.  At just 19 years old, the tall right hander has a long, lean frame that should be able to build more strength as he ages.  Being the son of baseball exec Sandy Alderson, Tim has a great idea of how to pitch and his command of all three of his pitches is extraordinary for a player of his age.  There have been concerns in the past about the herky-jerky mechanics of his delivery, as some feel that it could lead to injuries down the road.  These effects, however, have yet to deter Alderson from his rapid rate of development.

2009 Projection: San Francisco Giants fans have to be giddy about the possibility of a starting rotation consisting of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, and Alderson, all throwing to Buster Posey.  However, those dreams won't come to fruition...quite yet.  Expect Alderson, Bumgarner, and Posey to play together at AA Connecticut this season with 2010 MLB debuts, barring any major setbacks, being quite likely.  Alderson will make an ideal #3 or #4 starter in that uber-talented rotation.

Juan Francisco – Cincinnati Reds 3B

H/W:  6-2  180 lb.      B/T:  L/R     DOB:  6/24/87

Francisco continued to demonstrate his considerable power potential by hitting .277 with 23 HR 92 RBI and 34 doubles at HIgh-A Sarasota.  Long arms and strong core strength enable Francisco to launch balls with the same torque and fervency as fellow young Reds power hitters Jay Bruce and Joey Votto.  In addition to his lively bat, Francisco profiles to be an above average fielding 3B with good reactions and a cannon for an arm.  Juan has continued to demonstrate his eye-popping offensive potential in the Dominican Winter League where he hit .341 with 8 HR 25 RBI and 28 runs scored in just 32 games.  The biggest glaring weakness in his game continues to be his abysmal plate discipline as he walked just 16 times versus 123 K's last season.  Additionally, some scouts fear that his thick frame will gain too much bulk at the expense of his speed and athleticism.

2009 Projection: AA should prove to be quite the test for Juan Francisco, and should give the Reds a better glance of who will be their future 3B.  It is critical that Francisco improves his plate discipline against more advance pitching or else he could be stalled in his progression.  If he can, he has the potential to be an above average to All-Star caliber 3B in the mold of Adrian Beltre.

Michael Stanton – Florida Marlins OF

H/W:  6-5   205 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  11/8/89

Stanton made a big statement in '08 at Low-A Greensboro hitting .293 with 39 HR 97 RBI and 89 runs scored.  Stanton has prolific power potential that could easily translate into 40 HR per season at the MLB level.  Stanton's tall and strong frame evokes comparisons to Hall of Famer Dave Winfield.  Similar to Winfield, Stanton is an extremely good athlete with a strong arm and long strides that cover large swathes of range in RF.  Stanton has also shown that he is an intelligent hitter and his work ethic has been lauded by several within the organization.  Like many young power hitters, Stanton strikes out in bunches (153 in '08) but his desire to improve and his overall talent should help him to mitigate these numbers as he progresses.  Stanton has rapidly become one of baseball's elite OF talents, and he should pair nicely with Cameron Maybin in Miami for many years to come.

2009 Projection: Stanton should begin the season at High-A Jupiter with the potential to jump to AA Jacksonville.  Stanton is an elite prospect who should move quickly through the Marlins' farm system.  Watch to see how he addresses the challenges of being a fast track player.  The power numbers will always be there for Stanton, but watch to see if he can maintain his batting average and decrease his K totals.

Nick Weglarz – Cleveland Indians OF

H/W:  6-4  245 lb.     B/T:  L/L     DOB:  12/16/87

Where did the power go?  Weglarz had a solid season hitting .272 as a 20 year old in High-A Kinston, though he only produced 10 HR and 41 RBI in 106 games.  Weglarz has a tall, thick frame that produces good leverage and natural power from the left side of the plate.  Weglarz has highly advanced plate discipline, earning 71 BB/77 K's, but his willingness to take a walk often gives him a two-strike approach at the plate which, while good for making contact, often saps him of the tremendous pull power that he is capable of.  Defensively, Weglarz is below average and as he continues to age, he will likely be relegated to 1B or, worse, DH.  Weglarz has the power potential to hit 30-35 HR at the big league level once he learns to effectively use his massive strength.

2009 Projection: This is a pivotal season for Weglarz.  He will likely play at AA, and the Indians would be well suited to leave him there for the entire season.  The Tribe would like to see him be able to stick as a LF, as either Wes Hodges or Beau Mills will play 1B for them in the future.  Weglarz is an intriguing prospect to keep an eye on in '09.  Watch to see if he can get his power back on track and, if so, will it come at the expense of his plate discipline?  If he is able to increase his power and keep his BB/K totals intact, Weglarz is a solid under-the-radar buy.  Especially given the fact that he doesn't have many cards in circulation.

Ruben Tejada – New York Mets SS/2B

H/W:  5-11  165 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB: 9/1/89

The Mets aggressively pushed Tejada this season and it showed.  Tejada played the full season at High-A St. Lucie skipping a level.  Not surprisingly, Tejada struggled to maintain his sterling BB/K ratio and SB numbers.  Tejada's glove is ahead of his bat right now as he possesses above average range and arm strength to play SS at the MLB level.   His baserunning speed is good, though his SB numbers decreased from 35 in '07 to just 8 this season.  Tejada will never hit for much power, though his plate discipline is advanced for a player his age and could produce a solid average suitable for a top of the order hitter.  Additionally, Tejada is a mentally tough "grinder" whose work ethic has been lauded by team officials.

2009 Projection: Tejeda was the victim of an overly zealous organization that tends to rush its prospects too quickly through their system.  Expect Tejeda to repeat at St. Lucie with better results.  Watch to see if he can develop a little bit more extra-base pop while increasing his average.  Tejeda is very young still and has quite a way to go before realizing his projectible skills.  Temper your expectations, but do keep an eye on his development.

Wilmer Flores – New York Mets SS/3B

H/W:  6-3  175 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  8/6/91

Flores competed in his first pro season at three different levels as a 16 year old!  Flores started with short season Kingsport and ended up at full season Low-A Savannah combining to hit .307 with 8 HR 42 RBI and 40 runs scored in just 56 games.  Flores made great progress in building strength to compliment his quick hands and good bat speed.  Unlike most young prospects, Flores has an adept knowledge of the strike zone and he is difficult to strike out.  Flores has a long, athletic projectible frame that should build more power and bulk as he ages, which may force him to move to 3B.  Flores struggled a bit defensively making 19 errors, largely due to his cannon arm that became erratic at times.  Wilmer has average speed that is adequate to make plays defensively and run bases effectively, though he will not be a basestealing threat, especially after his body develops.  Baseball America rated Flores as the #1 prospect in the Mets system, beating out super prospect Fernando Martinez.  Given his young age and limitless ceiling, Flores could well fulfill those expectations.

2009 Projection: Next season should provide a good challenge for Flores as he will compete in his first full season campaign at Low-A Savannah.  The South Atlantic League has historically been a pitcher-friendly league, so Flores has his work cut out for him.  Flores' ultimate value is as a SS and the Mets would love to see him stay there as a future replacement for Jose Reyes.  Watch to see how he fields the ball this next season and also keep an eye on his body develops.  If he adds much more bulk or continues to be error prone, expect him to shift to 3B  Regardless of where he ends up, Flores is a elite prospect who could become a perennial all-star.  His cards are sure to scorch in the online market, especially his Donruss Threads and Bowman Chrome autographs.

Brandon Hamilton – Detroit Tigers

H/W:  6-2  205 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  12/25/88

By examining the stats, it is easy to sum up Hamilton's 2008 season.  The former supplemental 1st round pick was challenged by the Tigers as he began the season at full season Low-A West Michigan where he struggled mightily with his control and confidence.  Once the short season Gulf League began, Hamilton was sent there to work out his issues and he became an entirely different pitcher.  Stuffwise, Hamilton has lots to be optimistic about.  His fastball sits at 90-93 MPH, though it could a couple of notches as he matures and his nasty 80-82 MPH curveball is thought to be the best offspeed pitch in the entire Tigers system.  Combined with an average changeup, Hamilton has the stuff to be a solid #2 pitcher down the road.  His frame looks to be durable and strong enough to handle a 200 inning work load and his mechanics are said to be smooth and clean.  Command of his pitches and poise are the major areas that Hamilton needs to work on in order to fulfill his potential.

2009 Projection: Hamilton will likely get another crack at full season Western Michigan in 2009.  Expect him to build on his successful GCL campaign and keep an eye on his BB/K numbers.  The Tigers would be best served to take their time with Hamilton, resisting the temptation to develop him at the same speed as future ace Rick Porcello.  In the long run, this move could pay considerable dividends reviving values of his 2008 Donruss Threads autographs.

Nolan Reimold – Baltimore Orioles OF

H/W:  6-4  210 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  10/12/83

O's fans got a dose of what Reimold can do when fully healthy. Reimold battered AA pitching this season to the tune of a .284 25 HR 84 RBI 87 runs scored. Reimold has a power hitters frame at 6-4 210 lb. that is deceptively athletic. His right-handed swing generates easy power to all fields and he controls the strike zone effectively, earning 62 BB this season. Reimold's success has continued in the Arizona Fall League where he started slowly but has come back to hit .273 with 4 HR and 18 RBI in 24 games.  Defensively, he has good range and a cannon arm built for RF. The main detractor to Reimold's success has been his proneness to injury, though his healthy '08 season is cause for optimism. Additionally, due to his advanced age, Nolan will have added pressure to make a positive MLB impact earlier than many younger prospects.  Failure to do so may relegate him to the dreaded role of 4th outfielder or, even worse, AAAA player.

2009 Projection: Expect Reimold to get plenty of AB's in spring training with an outside shot of earning a spot on the O's opening day rosters.  More likely, Reimold will start 2009 at AAA with a promotion to Baltimore happening soon.  Watch to see how well Reimold plays this spring.  If he hits well, there is a shot that he could find his way onto the roster in a possible platoon position with O's LF Luke Scott.  A future outfield of Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, and Reimold should give Orioles fans ample reasons to be excited about their team's future.

2009 Update: Reimold has been on a hot streak ever since he showed up to spring training this year.  After belting four HR during his two week stint in the Grapefruit League, Nolan made his way to AAA Norfolk where he scorched International League pitching to the tune of a .349 BA with 9 HR 27 RBI and 6 SB in just over 100 AB.  Reimold earned his promotion to Baltimore on May 14th and has promptly blasted 4 HR and 9 RBI in his first 13 games.  Reimold's solid plate discipline and 30 HR power potential has effectively pushed the underachieving Felix Pie out of a job.  Expect Nolan to get the bulk of the playing time in LF and all signs point to him making a major push towards becoming the 2009 A.L. Rookie of the Year.

Josh Vitters – Chicago Cubs 3B

H/W:  6-3  200 lb.    B/T:  R/R     DOB:  8/27/89

Vitters played almost exclusively at short season Boise and demonstrated why he was worthy of the $3.2 million bonus that the Chicago Cubs paid him.  Vitters hit .328 with 5 HR 37 RBI and 25 doubles in 61 games.  Vitters is an elite young hitter with his bat grading at a 70 on the popular 20-80 scouting scale for both hitting for average and hitting for power.  His bat speed and hand-eye coordination is extremely high and he has shown an advanced ability for hitting the ball with power to all fields.  Vitters should develop much greater HR totals soon as testified by his high number of doubles last season.  His already strong frame projects to add more bulk as he matures.  Josh is an aggressive hitter who doesn't strike out too often, and walks even less (once every 20 AB).  Much of this can be due to Vitters' young age and developing knowledge of the strike zone and, optimistically, this number will improve in the upcoming seasons.

Defensively, Vitters is a work in progress.  He has a strong arm and good hands, but his .915 fielding percentage shows that he is still quite raw at the hot corner.  Vitters may find himself moving to 1B as he ages if he continues to struggle, though the Cubs are quite pleased with Vitters' work and determination to improve his defensive skills.  Regardless of where he ends up, it will be his bat that will make Vitters a special player within the next three years.

2009 Projection: Vitters will start the season at Low-A Peoria and one should think that the Cubs will move him to High-A if he continues to rake the ball.  Vitters should improve his walk rate over last year's totals.  Watch to see how he performs defensively at the hot corner.  Vitters has the bat to be a perennial 30 HR guy at the major league level which, as a 3B, would place him amongst the elite versus being a very good 1B.  Vitters is still a few years away from his Wrigley debut, but his autographed cards in the 2007 Bowman Sterling and 2008 Bowman Chrome sets are hot commodities right now.

Brent Brewer – Milwaukee Brewers SS

H/W:  6-2 190 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  12/19/87

Brewer struggled mightily out of the '08 gate even though he was repeating at West Virginia.  Regardless, the Brew Crew promoted him to High-A Brevard County where he performed better, especially after the All-Star break.  Brewer has an exciting blend of tools including athleticism, speed, and power potential that ranks well above average.  His long and lean frame indicates that he can develop 15-20 HR power as he matures, and his speed will allow for him to steal 30-40 bags each year.  The fly in Brewer's ointment revolves around his rawness at the plate.  True, he cut his strikeouts back from 170 in '07 to 111 last season and his walk rate remained the same but he needs to continue to increase his competence in working counts and making contact with off speed pitches as he progresses.

2009 Projection: There is good reason to think that his power will develop based on the 30 doubles he smacked in pitcher-friendly leagues last season.  Look for Milwaukee to have Brewer repeat at Brevard County to start the season, with a trip to Huntsville being a distinct mid to late season possibility.  The Brewers have J.J. Hardy manning the helm at shortstop for the next few seasons which should be more than enough time for Brewer to develop into a Brewer.  Keep a close eye on his BB/K ratio and also to see if he can increase his SLG%.  Brewer's skill set and ceiling is similar to that of Tampa Bay Rays star B.J. Upton.  If he can refine his skills, his 2008 Donruss Threads autographs will be a worthwhile investment.

Tyler Flowers – Atlanta Braves C

H/W:  6-4  245 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB: 1/24/86

Flowers had a solid season at High-A Myrtle Beach hitting .288 with 17 HR 88 RBI and a league-high 98 walks.  Flowers has a massive frame that should produce 25-30 HR power at the major league level.  If he sticks as a catcher, this would make him an All-Star, though it is quite possible that he will have to move to a corner infield position as Brian McCann is firmly entrenched as the leader of the Braves' battery.  Flowers has enough athleticism to make the move to 1B or 3B and the move may be better for him in the long run as he has already had a knee surgery.  One caveat to Flowers' game is his 50 game suspension for the use of PED's that he served at the beginning of the '07 season.  Flowers, for his part, admitted to the mistake saying that he used bad judgment as a member of Chipola CC's baseball team.  Braves officials seem to be satisfied with the progress that Flowers has made since the suspension.

2009 Projection: Flowers has absolutely hammered Arizona Fall League pitching to the tune of a .385 BA with a league leading 10 HR 18 RBI and 20 runs scored.  Expect his '09 debut to be with AAA Gwinnett and, if he can continue to replicate his promising numbers, a trip to Atlanta is imminent.  Flowers' first year autographs in the 2008 Donruss Threads set are immensely popular and should continue as he blossoms into a major league slugger.

Drew Stubbs – Cincinnati Reds OF

H/W:  6-4  200 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB: 10/4/84

In 2008 Drew Stubbs took some strides in putting his critics to rest.  Stubbs began slowly at High A Sarasota where he hit .261 with 5 HR 38 RBI and 27 SB in 86 games.  Stubbs then was promoted to AA Chattanooga and AAA Louisville where he combined to hit .305 with 2 HR 19 RBI and 6 SB in 45 games.  Stubbs still strikes out too much (123 times in 131 games) given his low power numbers, but his walk rate remains strong boosting his OBP to .371 this season.  Defensively, he has the skills to be a Read the full story

Alexis Oliveras – Cincinnati Reds OF

H/W:  6-0  180 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  3/29/89

Oliveras was a 9th round selection in the 2007 draft out of Puerto Rico's baseball acadamy.  The Reds are excited about his bat though it is early to tell just what it will produce at higher levels.  From initial scouting, Oliveras has a line drive producing left-handed swing that could projectibly produce 15-20 HR power as he matures.  Oliveras has average speed and profiles as a solid defensive LF.  The Reds will likely take their time with Alexis, as his plate discipline and power are currently very raw and will take a long time to develop.  Though he is projectible, he is far from a sure fire top prospect.  Keep an discerning eye on his development.

2009 Projection: Oliveras will likely begin the '09 season at extended spring training with a short season stint at Billings likely.  The plate discipline has to develop in order for Oliveras to progress.  This season should give a better view of just what to expect out of him in the future.

Patrick Ryan – Milwaukee Brewers RHP

H/W:  6-0  200 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  5/31/83

Ryan pitched exclusively in relief for AA-Huntsville going 5-5 with a 2.52 ERA and 6 saves.  He proved to be more hittable this season and his control was not as sharp as it was in his two stops in 2007.  Ryan is not overpowering but his 90-92 MPH fastball has good late life down in the strike zone and his hard curveball and change rate as solid average MLB pitches.  The sink on Ryan's fastball effectively induces ground ball outs.  This season he induced his groundball/flyball ratio of 2.96 made him very effective Read the full story

Lou Marson – Philadelphia Phillies C

H/W:  6-1  195 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  7/26/86

Marson had a very successful campaign at AA Reading, hitting .314 with 5 HR and 46 RBI.  Marson also was part of bronze medal-winning Team USA in the Beijing Olympics, hitting .312 in limited action.  In his major league debut, Marson went 2-4 with his first major league HR 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.  There is a lot to like about Marson's game.  He has a short and solid line drive stroke that should produce 10-15 HR power at the MLB level while hitting for a high average.  His plate discipline is very advanced for his age, testified by a respectable 68 BB/70 K ratio this season.  Defensively, he has great instincts Read the full story
