Cody Satterwhite – Detroit Tigers RHP

H/W:  6-4  205 lb.     B/T:  R/R    DOB:  1/27/87

The Detroit Tigers saw projectibility and two MLB-plus pitches when they selected the Ole Miss University hurler in the 2nd round of the '08 draft.  Promptly converted to a late inning reliever, Satterwhite threw 20.2 innings at two stops earning 3 saves, a 3.92 ERA and a 13 BB/24 K ratio.  Satterwhite has an explosive 95 MPH fastball with excellent late movement that moves in on the hands of RH batters.  His slider has high upside with a violent two plane break, but he has had trouble commanding it at times.  He has dabbled with developing a changeup, but it really hasn't taken as of yet.  Satterwhite has a tall, broad frame that still has quite a bit of projectibility left, which leads some to believe that he can tack on some additional ticks to the velocity of his fastball.  His inconsistent delivery and loose mechanics causes him to miss up in the zone quite a bit which makes him hittable and marginalizes his ability to induce groundball outs.  This could serve as a problem at higher levels.  The Tigers are quite enamored with the closer potential of 1st rounder Ryan Perry, and given Satterwhite's young age, there is still some possibility that he could be developed as a starter in the future.

2009 Projection: Satterwhite will get a nice dose of full season ball at High-A Lakeland this season.  The Tigers would like to see him get better command of his off-speed stuff and would like for him to utilize his frame to throw downhill on hitters.  His control numbers are the obvious things to watch, but keep an eye on his FO/GO ratio as well.  If he can bump that up over 1.00 (it was 0.57 last season),  he can rapidly become a dominant reliever.  Relief pitching has been a thorn in the side of the Tigers for the past few seasons, but there is high hopes that the combination of Satterwhite and Ryan Perry could help this club shorten games and put more wins on the scoreboard.

David Adams – New York Yankees 2B

H/W:  6-2  205 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  5/15/87

Adams' numbers experienced a slight dip in 2008, but the Yankees liked the Virginia alum enough to select him in the 3rd round.  Adams performed decently at short season Low-A Staten Island, hitting .257 with 4 HR 31 RBI and 45 runs scored.  Adams is a hard nosed and intelligent player who makes the most of his average tools on both offense and defense.  He didn't hit for much power in college, yet his thick frame and the fact that Virginia's home park is one of the toughest hitters park in Division-I baseball gives optimism that more should come.  Adams is a savvy and agressive baserunner who is always looking to take extra bases to get himself into scoring position.  He showed advanced plate discipline having earned a respectible 32 BB/57 K last season.  The rub on players like Adams is that his lack of projectivity or standout tools limits his potential ceiling.  He will work tirelessly to scratch his way to Yankee Stadium, but he will always have to look over his shoulder to fend off younger, more talented prospects.

2009 Projection: Adams should move to full season Low-A Charleston to start the season.  Given his collegiate polish, there is a good chance that a promotion to Tampa will also be in the cards.  Keep an eye out for the power progression.  He has the potential to bang out 12-18 HR per season once he becomes more aggressive with balls inner part of the plate.  Also, keep tabs on his K rate this year.  He is a patient hitter, but sometimes this can serve as a detriment as pitchers will exploit them with fastballs early in the count and breaking pitches with two strikes.  The Yankees organization is quite thin throughout their middle infield and the swirling trade rumors involving current 2B Robinson Cano should bode well for Adams' future opportunities.

Ryan Westmoreland – Boston Red Sox OF

H/W:  6-2  195 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  4/27/90

The Red Sox continued their trend of luring toolsy, prep athletes away from college programs by signing them to over-slot bonuses.  Westmoreland was slated to accept a scholarship from Vanderbilt before the Sox snatched him in the 5th round and offered a $1.6 million bonus.

Evoking comparisons to fellow Rhode Island native Rocco Baldelli, Ryan has a long, lean frame that exudes athleticism and projects to hit for above average power.  He has fast hands and a balanced swing that provides power to the gaps.  Westmoreland is an intelligent player with a good feel for the strike zone and sound plate discipline, testified by the fact that he earned a 17 BB/2 K ratio as a high school senior.  Scouts who have watched him play rate his speed as being just a tick below that of current Red Sox leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury.  Ryan uses his speed well on the bases and in CF where he is adept at running down balls and utilizing his plus arm strength to gun down baserunners.

There are few flaws in Westmoreland's game, but the fact that Ryan needed off season shoulder surgery is  somewhat of a concern.  The surgery will keep him out until June and, while the Red Sox are optimistic that he will recover fully, it is unclear at this point just how much the injury will set him back.

2009 Projection: Westmoreland has yet to get a professional AB under his belt but things look good for him to start the 2009 season with the Sox GCL affiliate.  All eyes will be on Westmoreland to see if the tools carry over into professional baseball and whether the shoulder injury is a thing of the past or, worse, another comparison to the injury-riddled Rocco Baldelli.

Brett Wallace – St. Louis Cardinals 1B

H/W:  6-2  235 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  8/26/86

The Cardinals felt blessed to have the Arizona State alum fall to them at the 13th overall pick of the '08 draft.  Wallace responded remarkably well to every challenge thrown his way hitting a combined .337 with 8 HR 36 RBI and 41 runs scored in just 54 games.  The hot streak continued in the Arizona Fall League as Wallace batted .309 with 6 HR and 24 RBI.  A thick build and quick left-handed swing gives Wallace the ability to drive the ball out of any part of the park and his plate discipline should allow for him to hit for a high average and OBP.  Despite the many murmurs from baseball scouts who think that he is incapable of playing 3B at the major league level, Wallace impressed many with his soft hands and strong arm at the hot corner.  Wallace has a thick and heavy lower body that deters from his athletic potential and should relegate him to 1B at some point in his career.  Albert Pujols has 1B locked down for the several seasons to come.  It will be of utmost importance for Brett to stick at 3B as long has he can.

2009 Projection: The Cardinals have placed Brett Wallace on the fast track to the major leagues.  While his bat is ready, his glove and body needs some work.  Expect Wallace to start the '09 season either at AA Springfield or AAA Memphis before earning a spot in St. Louis' lineup at some point later in the season.  As of right now, the Cards have the injury-prone Troy Glaus manning the hot corner.  If he goes down with an injury, Wallace should get his shot.  Once he's here, expect several .300 seasons with 25-30 HR to follow.

David Cooper – Toronto Blue Jays 1B

H/W:  6-1 210 lb.     B/T:  L/L     DOB:  2/12/87

The Blue Jays 2008 1st rounder had a very successful debut season excelling at three levels to the tune of a .333 BA with 5 HR 51 RBI and 29 doubles in just 69 games.  His fluid, quick swing generates good loft and surprising gap power that could translate to 20-25 HR per season.  Additionally, Cooper has impeccable plate discipline which should help him draw about 60-75 walks each season.  While Cooper is adept with the bat, he is merely average with the glove and below average on the basepaths.  The Blue Jays haven't had a first baseman this good since the days of John Olerud.  Given his offensive upside, Cooper could carve out a similar career path.

2009 Projection: After excelling at three different Single-A stops, the Jays should feel comfortable about sending Cooper to AA New Hampshire for the beginning of the '09 season.  Keep track of Cooper's power numbers this season as he should start to translate some of the doubles into HR's soon.  Current Toronto 1B Lyle Overbay is signed through the 2010 season which should give more than enough time for the Jays' future first sacker time to develop.

Eric Hosmer – Kansas City Royals 1B

B/T:  6-4  215 lb.     B/T:  L/L     DOB:  10/24/89

The Royals continued their recent trend of drafting 1st round power bats by selecting Eric Hosmer with the 3rd overall pick.  Hosmer signed late, but impressed Royals brass by rapping 4 hits in 11 AB at shorts season Idaho Falls.  The consensus of many scouts is that Hosmer has the best bat in the '08 prep class.  His balanced lefty swing is quick and projects to hit for above average power at the major league level.  Contrary to many young, projectible power hitters, Hosmer has advanced plate discipline and a good mental approach to his at bats.  On the defensive side, Hosmer's soft hands and good reactions play extraordinarily well at 1B.  Baserunning speed will never be Eric's calling card.   He has thick legs and below average speed that should clog bases as he gets older.  Additionally, he has struggled to hit balls up and in on his hands with authority.  Given his quick swing, he should be able to develop more torque to increase his hand speed to prevent himself from being jammed.  The Royals recently acquired Mike Jacobs but make no mistake, the talented Jacobs is merely a stop gap that is keeping the 1B bag warm for Hosmer's arrival within the next few seasons.

2009 Projection: Hosmer's polished bat may take him to full season Low-A Burlington to start the season.  While Hosmer should hit for a high average, the breadth of his future power production is still up in the air.  Watch to see if he can produce 15 or more HR in his first season.  Also, his other extra base hit totals will give a better idea of the power totals that can be expected from him in future seasons.  The Royals are putting some quality pieces into their organization and their future as a contender in the A.L. Central is becoming more and more a reality with each passing season and successful draft.  Hosmer's bat will play a big part in bringing the Royals franchise to prominence once again.

Pedro Alvarez – Pittsburgh Pirates 3B

H/W:  6-2  210 lb.     B/T: L/R     DOB: 7/18/87

After a long and bitter contract negotiation, the Pittsburgh Pirates finally came to an agreement with the former Vanderbilt star after the August 14 deadline.  Alvarez is a very polished hitter who already has a bat that is close to major league ready.  His left-handed swing generates above average power and should hit for a fairly high batting average at the major league level.  Scouts have praised him for the high level of energy and competitive drive that he brings to the ballpark every day.  A broken hamate bone in his hand cut into Alvarez's '08 season, but he worked dilligently to get back on the field within a month of the injury.  When he did return, Pedro struggled to produce the same consistent power that he had demonstrated prior to the injury, which has some baseball officials concerned about potential lingering power issues.  Additionally, Alvarez's defensive tools at 3B are average across the board and some think that he will eventually need to make the switch over to 1B in the future.  All told, the Pirates have to be ecstatic to finally land their highest draft choice since selecting Bryan Bullington with the 1st overall pick in 2003.  All signs point to Alvarez being a much better player than Bullington, giving the Bucs hope that they will finally right the ship that has been sinking since the days of Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla.

2009 Projection: Given the fact that Alvarez signed a major league contract, it is reasonable to believe that the Pirates will promote him aggressively to High-A Lynchburg to start the season.  Watch to see how his power numbers and plate discipline shape up early in the season.  If things look good, the Bucs will bump him to AA at some point in the season.  Adam LaRoche's future with Pittsburgh likely will not extend beyond the 2009 season and the Pirates would love to see either Alvarez or Adam's little brother Andy fill that position in the not too distant future.  Expect Pedro in this lineup at some point in 2010.

Yonder Alonso – Cincinnati Reds 1B

H/W:  6-2  215 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  4/8/87

The Cuban-born University of Miami first baseman had a monster season in 2008 hitting .370 with 24 HR 70 RBI and 80 runs scored.  Given that he didn't sign until the deadline, Yonder did not accrue many minor league AB's, but his stint in the pitcher-friendly Hawaiian Winter League rendered positive results, as he hit .304 with 4 HR 21 RBI and a 20 BB/23 K ratio in 29 games.  Alonso has above average power that should translate to 25-30 HR per season in Cincinnati.  He hits the ball to all fields and is very effective at working counts and drawing walks.  Alonso has a thick barrel-chested build that he worked hard to tighten up before his final season with Miami.  Defensively, Alonso is limited to 1B and his array of skills at that position are average at best.  Though he has very good power to centerfield and leftfield, Alonso needs to continue to pull balls on the inner half of the plate instead of using an inside-out swing to spray them the other way.  Once he does, his power numbers should increase significantly.

2009 Projection: Yonder's offensive polish and ticking MLB contract ensures that the Reds will promote him aggressively through their system.  Expect Alonso to start at High-A Sarasota with a promotion to AA Carolina at some point in the season.  The Reds are pretty set with Joey Votto at 1B, but given Alonso's offensive potential and limited defensive abilities, the Reds may decide to shift Votto to LF in the future.

Justin Smoak – Texas Rangers 1B

H/W:  6-4  220 lb.     B/T:  S/L     DOB:  12/6/86

The Rangers were delighted to see the former South Carolina Gamecock and 1st team All-American fall to them at the 10th slot of the '08 draft.   Smoak continued his torrid hitting at Low-A Clinton (.304 3 HR 6 RBI in 14 games) and in a brief stint in the Arizona Fall League.  His smooth swing and easy power from both sides of the plate evokes comparisons to current MLB sluggers Mark Teixeira and Lance Berkman and, similar to those two, many baseball scouts think Smoak will have 35-40 HR power with a high average and solid plate discipline in the major leagues.  Defensively, Smoak is a highly capable first baseman with an average arm, a very good glove and above average footwork around the bag.  The biggest downside to Justin's game right now is his below average speed on the basepaths.  Given his profile as a run producing middle of the lineup hitter, this is a very minor detal.

2009 Projection: Smoak is on the fast track to Arlington, making it no surprise if the Rangers were to begin him at AA Frisco.  If they don't, he will assuredly begin the season at High-A Bakersfield with a promotion at some point being a virtual certainty.  The biggest thing to watch with Smoak is his early power production, the more he produces, the quicker his ascent to Texas will be.   The Rangers have big plans to replace Hank Blalock's bat with Smoak's by the spring of 2010.  Don't be surprised if the young draftee earns an audition in September.

Anthony Hewitt – Philadelphia Phillies SS/OF

H/W:  6-1  195 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB: 4/27/89

Hewitt's stock rose considerably prior to the 2008 draft as scouts witnessed his exciting assortment of tools.  Hewitt was drafted 24th overall by the Phillies and signed quickly.  Philadelphia sent him to their GCL affiliate where he struggled in 33 games hitting just .195 with 1 HR 17 RBI 2 SB and a raw 7 BB/55 K ratio.  Hewitt has as much athleticism as anyone in the draft and his strength shows promise of future power development as he matures and refines his skills. Defensively, Hewitt has some good tools but they profile better in the OF than at SS.  His good range and strong arm should play well in CF.  The biggest caveat with Hewitt is his extreme rawness.  He played ball in the northeast against lesser competition.  Hewitt lacks the plate discipline and overall fluidity to his game that found in other 1st round prospects.  This makes Hewitt a classic example of a high risk, high upside prospect that could either catch fire or flame out in future seasons.

2009 Projection: The Phillies have a glut of athletic and projectible OF talents in their system.  This allows them to take their time developing Hewitt into an MLB player.  Hewitt should spend time at extended spring training before joining the Phillies at short season Williamsport in June.  Keep an eye on his BB/K numbers and his extra base hits.  Also watch to see if the Phillies try to develop him as a SS.  With the depth of OF talent in Philiadelphia's farm system, Hewitt's ability to stay at SS will increase the odds of him progressing to Philadelphia.  Regardless of his position, he is a long way from Citizen's Bank Ballpark.
