Brandon Crawford – San Francisco Giants SS

H/W:  6-2  200 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  1/21/87

The Giants selected the former UCLA Bruin in the 4th round of the 2008 draft.  After a junior season that saw him hit .302 with 7 HR 51 RBI and 11 SB, he has turned up his production a notch as a member of the San Jose Giants by hitting .395 with 3 HR 8 RBI and 10 runs scored in his first 12 games.  Crawford has good size and strength for a shortstop with excellent pull power and above average speed.  He had some problems with getting pull happy as a collegiate player, and he is currently averaging about a strikeout per game with San Jose.  Defensively, Crawford has decent range and good arm strength, though there are some concerns that he has apexed physically and may lose a step or two in the next few seasons.  Last season's struggles with the Bruins seemed to affect his confidence on both offense and defense, but his quick start this season serves as evidence that he has put that behind him and is allowing his natural abilities to dictate his performance.  He is a heady player who competes well and carries a cerebral approach to all aspects of his game.

2009 Projection: Crawford should play most or all of the season at High-A San Jose alongside mega-talents like Buster Posey, Angel Villalona, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Alderson, Connor Gillaspie, and Nick Noonan.  Crawford has enough talent and polish to be a starting shortstop at the major league level within the next two seasons, but there is still some work to do.  His strikeout rate is too high and he has yet to show an ability to put up a respectable BB/K ratio since he first set foot on UCLA's campus.  The grind of a major league season has multiple periods of highs and lows and there has already been criticism of his ability to play with a high level of confidence during slumping periods.  If he can move beyond this, he is a 15-20 HR hitter with double digit steal potential.  Currently, Emmanuel Burriss is the only viable SS prospect ahead of him on San Francisco's organizational depth chart and current Giants SS Edgar Renteria really has just two or three more productive seasons left.  Crawford is someone to watch in an organization that is rapidly becoming one of baseball's best and brightest.

Pablo Sandoval – San Francisco Giants 3B/1B

H/W:  5-11  245 lb.     B/T:  S/R     DOB:  8/11/86

The switch hitting former catcher broke out in a big way in 2008, tormenting pitchers at both High-A San Jose and AA Connecticut for a .350 BA with 20 HR 96 RBI, 90 runs scored and 38 doubles in just 112 games.  Sandoval earned a promotion to San Francisco where he didn't miss a beat, hitting .345 with 3 HR 24 RBI and 10 doubles in 145 AB.  Sandoval has a lightning-quick bat that produces easy power from both sides of the plate.  He makes excellent contact, but doesn't work counts as effectively as someone with his potent bat should.  Last season Sandoval combined to walk just 35 times in nearly 600 AB.  Defensively, the rotund Sandoval is quite mobile at both infield corner positions, earning just one error in 179 chances.  He has excellent arm strength and soft hands ideal for the hot corner.

2009 Projection: All signs point to Sandoval having a huge first full season as a major leaguer.  He has hit almost .450 this spring with excellent XBH power and solid plate discipline.  The main concern with Sandoval going forward will be his weight, as heavier set players have increased difficulties staying healthy over the course of a 162 game season.  His bat, though, is for real and has all the look and functionality of a switch-hitting Edgar Martinez.  The Giants are an organization filled with younger talent waiting to blossom.  Sandoval will be one of the parties leading the charge very soon.

Emmanuel Burriss – San Francisco Giants SS

H/W:  6-0  190 lb.     B/T:  S/R     DOB:  1/17/85

Emmanuel Burriss missed a considerable amount of time last season with a left oblique injury that nagged him throughout the first part of the season.  Regardless, he was able to log in about 240 AB in his first major league season producing a solid 283 BA with 1 HR 18 RBI and 13 SB.  Burriss has fleet feet that wreak havoc on the basepaths as testified by the 103 SB he logged in his two previous minor league seasons.  A contact hitter, Burriss works counts efficiently and is almost impossible to strike out.  He is an excellent bunter and hits line drives to all fields with little to no power.  Defensively, Burriss has the ability to play both SS and 2B or the OF in a pinch.  He needs to continue to shore up his glove work and arm accuracy in order to stick as a starter.

2009 Projection: Burriss has looked sharp this spring hitting .397.  The Giants are locked in at SS with the off season signing of Edgar Renteria, and Kevin Frandsen is the early favorite to receive most of the playing time at 2B.  However, Burriss is a serviceable utility guy who should get a considerable amount of playing time at either position throughout the season.  He has a strong frame that could add a little more XBH pop as he matures.  That would do nothing but help his chances to receive more playing time.  In a full season, Burriss is a threat to steal 35-40 bases while hitting for a high average and excellent OBP.

Wendell Fairley – San Francisco Giants

H/W:  6-2  190 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  3/17/88

The best athlete of the 2007 draft had a decent debut season with the Giants' Arizona Rookie League hitting .259 with 2 HR 17 RBI 7 SB and 39 runs scored in 50 games.  Fairley has all of the physical tools to be an elite prospect in the near future.  His bat speed ranks amongst the best in the Giants system and he projects to hit for both power and average as he ages.  He uses his speed aggressively on the basepaths and in CF where he covers wide swathes of real estate.  His arm can play at any OF spot and he has shown the ability to read the ball well off of the bat.  One pleasant surprise was his advanced plate discipline.  Fairley garnered a 26 BB/37 K ratio which boosted his OBP to a respectible .388.  The culpabilities with Wendell have to do with his history of off the field indiscretions that have included alleged assault and and a misdemeanor conviction as a high schooler.  He has appeared to move beyond these problems, though, and has not had any recurrences of problems as a member of the Giants organization.

2009 Projection: Fairley should get his first dose of full season baseball in April when the Giants send him to Low-A Augusta.  The boost in his strike zone discipline is intriguing and it remains to be seen if this trend can continue.  The power should kick in at some point as well.  There are plenty of reasons to believe that Fairley can evolve into a 20 HR 20 SB player at the major league level within the next three to four seasons.  The San Francisco Giants are loaded with high upside talent on the mound and in the field.  It is just a matter of time before this organization ascends to the top of the N.L. West and Fairley will be a big part of that future.

Tim Alderson – San Francisco Giants

H/W:  6-7  217 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  11/3/88

While fellow moundsman Madison Bumgarner earned all of the accolades and attention as San Francisco's best minor league pitcher, Alderson quietly compiled a fine first full season of his own.  Pitching exclusively at High-A San Jose, he compiled a 13-4 record with a 2.79 ERA and a stellar 34 BB/124 K ratio in 145 IP.  Alderson has three outstanding pitches to choose from; a 92-94 MPH fastball with good movement, a low-80's curveball with a two plane break, and a solid changeup.  At just 19 years old, the tall right hander has a long, lean frame that should be able to build more strength as he ages.  Being the son of baseball exec Sandy Alderson, Tim has a great idea of how to pitch and his command of all three of his pitches is extraordinary for a player of his age.  There have been concerns in the past about the herky-jerky mechanics of his delivery, as some feel that it could lead to injuries down the road.  These effects, however, have yet to deter Alderson from his rapid rate of development.

2009 Projection: San Francisco Giants fans have to be giddy about the possibility of a starting rotation consisting of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, and Alderson, all throwing to Buster Posey.  However, those dreams won't come to fruition...quite yet.  Expect Alderson, Bumgarner, and Posey to play together at AA Connecticut this season with 2010 MLB debuts, barring any major setbacks, being quite likely.  Alderson will make an ideal #3 or #4 starter in that uber-talented rotation.

Rafael Rodriguez – San Francisco Giants OF

H/W:  6-5  200 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  7/13/92

The youngest addition to the Giants baseball family received a $2.55 million gift on his 16th birthday.  Rodriguez has immense power potential and 5-tool athleticism drawing several comparisons to fellow Dominican Vladimir Guererro.  Giants former manager Felipe Alou was very impressed by his bat speed and hand-eye coordination, mentioning that he didn't see him swing and miss at a pitch against more advanced competition.  Amidst all of the positives, there are plenty of questions in Raffy-Rod's game.  Some scouts have criticized his long, loopy swing as being strikeout prone and others feel he will develop into a one dimensional hitter.  There are some concerns that he may grow too big to maintain his plus speed as he ages.  The Giants will likely develop Rodriguez in much the same manner that they are with 1B Angel Villalona.

2009 Projection: Expect Rodriguez to begin the season at the Giants' extended spring training camp before heading to their Arizona League rookie affiliate in June.  If he is successful there, it is not out of the question to see him get some late season AB's at short-season Salem-Kaiser.  Keep an eye on Rodriguez's K-rate.  This seems to be the biggest concern that scouts have with his game right now.  Rodriguez is a good four or five years away from being a MLB player, but he is worth watching right now.

Buster Posey – San Francisco Giants C

H/W:  6-2  195 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  3/27/87

Posey, the 5th overall pick in the '08 draft, signed for a super over-slot $6.2 million in mid-August.  Posey did his part to justify the cost by hitting .351 with a HR and 7 RBI in 10 short season games.  Posey then travelled to the Hawaiian Winter League and continued to shine at the plate hitting .338 with 15 RBI and 15 runs in 19 games.

Posey has a tremendous bat that should produce a high average with 15-20 HR power at the major league level.  Posey is a well-disciplined hitter who works counts effectively and makes superb contact.  Posey was converted from shortstop to catcher at FSU and his athleticism should play well defensively behind the plate.

Drawbacks to Posey's game revolve around his inexperience behind the plate.  He experienced some early troubles at in the HWL and was sent to the Giants' instructional camp in Arizona for a brief stretch before making his return.  Posey's bat is his best tool and it will be what should keep him on the fast track to San Francisco.

2009 Projection: Posey will likely begin next season at Low-A Augusta or High-A San Jose.  It seems that the Giants would be best suited to connect Posey with their stable of young arms like Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson.  The Giants currently have Pablo Sandoval in the fold as their backstop, though his long term future behind the plate is dubious at best.  Expect Posey to move quickly through the system with an ETA of late 2010 or early 2011.

Nick Noonan – San Francisco Giants 2B

H/W:  6-0  180 lb.     B/T:  L/R     DOB:  5/4/89

Noonan filled up the stat sheet in 2008 hitting .279 with 9 HR 68 RBI 29 SB and 79 runs scored at Low-A Augusta.  The young second basemen is an exceptional athlete with good speed and a sweet left-handed swing that should develop 10-15 HR power in the future.  Defensively, he has good range and soft hands for a second baseman and an average arm.  With that being said, Noonan needs to cut back on his strikeouts and develop a more discerning eye at the plate as testified by his 23 BB/98 K ratio.  If he can do this, he will make a superb MLB leadoff hitter.

2009 Projection: Noonan should advance to High-A San Jose of the California League.  Expect Noonan to put up a higher average (close to .300) with double digit power numbers.  Keep an eye on his BB/K ratio.  If it improves, his stock as a top of the order hitter improves significantly.

Wilber Bucardo – San Fransisco Giants RHP

H/W:  6-2  175 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  11/20/87

Bucardo struggled a bit this season in his repeat performance at short season Salem-Keizer.  Bucardo went 6-7 with a 4.57 ERA and 40 K's in 67 IP.  Burcardo proved to be quite hittable allowing a .357 BAA.  Bucardo has decent stuff, a 90-92 MPH fastball with heavy sink and a solid slider and change that needs polish.  Bucardo has decent control and his sinker effectively induces ground ball outs.  Read the full story

Angel Villalona – San Francisco Giants 1B

H/W:  6-3  210 lb.     B/T:  R/R     DOB:  8/13/90

The Giants doled out $2.1 million to sign the 17 year old Villalona out of the Dominican Republic in 2006.   Villalona spent his first year in the minors at full season Augusta where he hit .263 with 17 HR and 64 RBI.  This young slugger has power potential that rates off of the charts.  His strapping frame still has a lot of room for strength development, which gives many observers the feeling that Angel should develop into a 40 HR per season player.  Angel is surprisingly Read the full story
